White marble sheep grazing with its fleece cut in deep separated locks
Standing Sheep White Marble Statue - 80cm $12,51800
Description

A sheep stands with its fleece cut in long separated locks over back and flank. The face and legs are left smooth and a carved stump stands between the forelegs to support the belly. The two versions differ: one grazes on a smooth slab, the other stands on rough-hewn rock. One animal is what this price buys, so please tell us which you would like. White marble, matte and even and cool in tone, the fleece locks crisply cut.

A Fleece of Locks Over a Stump That Works

Two things on this sheep are doing jobs that look decorative. The fleece is cut as separated curled locks rather than as an overall texture, which means the whole back has to be left proud until the very end and then worked as one field, each lock undercut against its neighbour. And the stump between the forelegs is structural: a deep-bodied animal on four slender legs leaves a long unsupported span of marble under the barrel, and marble does not sag, it snaps. So the stump is sized for the load before it is made to look like vegetation, and it is brought to its final section only once the body above it is finished and its true weight is known.

At 80cm and 299kg this is among the smallest pieces in the range and four people can carry it. At 80cm the raised head is around thigh height, and the fleece is read close to. The fleece is the whole pleasure of the carving and it is shadow work - separated locks, each undercut - which means it wants close approach and raking light, not distance. A lawn edge, a gravel bed, a border, a paved corner, the foot of a hedge, or indoors on a hall floor. Two of these read far better than one, and since the price buys a single animal that is worth settling before ordering.

Small, Low, and Read Close To

Twelve to fourteen weeks. Cutting the fleece as separated locks over a stump support governs the whole schedule. With the base dressed, the sheep is blocked out above it - all four legs carried as heavy columns and the stump left a solid lump under the belly. The barrel comes down next, with the back deliberately left standing proud. The head, smooth face and legs follow. The fleece is then worked as one field, lock by undercut lock, and the stump is brought to section last. Animal, stump and base are one block, with no pin and no filler at all. Only 299kg for one animal and base, which four people bed onto a prepared pad. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Grazing animals are few in animal sculptures, and lawn pieces belong to garden statues.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
