Standing Sheep White Marble Statue - 250cm $29,55900
Description

A sheep stands with its head raised and turned, both horns swept back and ringed, the fleece long. Both horns are ringed with fine transverse bands, the fleece falls in long waved locks down neck, chest and flank and frees itself into hanging points along the hem, and the near foreleg is set forward on a rock outcrop with the far hind leg trailing behind. It stands on a mass of carved rock over a moulded rectangular slab. White marble, matte and even, soft grey drift through the rock mass and the flank. The supplier's own name calls this both a sheep and a goat, and the note below says where we have landed and why.

A Fleece That Frees Itself at the Hem

Two fields of carving meet on this piece and they pull in opposite directions. The fleece is long waved locks running with the body, cut as deep ridge and groove over the flank and then freed along the hem, where each lock hangs clear of the one behind it with daylight between. The rock beneath is angular faceted planes with hard arrises, running against it. Where the trailing hind leg and the forward foreleg pass into the rock, a hanging lock and an arris arrive at the same place - and if either is cut first the other has to be fitted around it, which shows. So the boundary is marked on the block before either field is begun, the rock is brought to within a few millimetres of finish, and the hem is then freed down to an edge that already exists. Those last locks over the rock are the most exposed work on the piece.

The supplier's name for this piece contains both words, and the carving itself does not settle which is meant. There is no beard: the chin and jaw are clean and the long hair falls from the neck as a ruff. The horns sweep back and are ringed, which fits either animal, and the heavy woolly fleece fits a sheep better than a goat - so sheep is what we have listed, and we have asked the workshop to confirm. At 250cm on its rock the head is carried high and the fleece falls the depth of the body. On its rock at this height it wants distance and sky: a paddock corner, an open lawn, the crest of a slope, the end of a long walk, a parkland setting. The hanging locks are shadow work and want raking light, so a position catching a low sun morning or evening gets far more out of it than flat shade.

Sheep or Goat - What the Name Says

Twenty-six to twenty-eight weeks. Freeing the coat into hanging locks along the hem is what governs the whole schedule. The rock mass is blocked out and the boundary between rock and fleece marked before either is begun. The animal is roughed above it, the four legs left heavy and the horns as thick tapered stubs. Body and neck come down, then the head. The rock is brought almost to finish, and the fleece is cut as ridge and groove over the body and freed into hanging locks along the hem to meet it. The horns are ringed and brought to section last. Goat and rock come from one block, with nothing pinned, dowelled or filled. Some 9,118kg for beast and rock, craned in one lift onto a poured concrete foundation. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Mountain animals are few in animal sculptures, and the tallest under large garden statues.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
