Description

A bull stands head raised and turned front, the body heavily muscled and smoothed. The horns curve up and out from a combed topknot between the ears, the dewlap hangs in combed folds down the throat, and the tail loops up from the rump before falling in a combed switch. The barrel is deep and the shoulder swells. It stands on a slab whose face carries a carved band of chevrons. White marble with a faint cream warmth, smooth and matte, the surface unbroken.

Combed Grooves as the Last and Finest Work

Everything about this bull is smoothed into large simple volumes except three passages - the topknot, the dewlap and the tail switch - which are cut as tight parallel grooves, and those three carry the whole character of the piece. Parallel grooving is deceptively hard: the grooves must stay the same width and the same depth along their length, and they must run truly parallel over a surface that curves in two directions at once. A groove that wanders or shallows out is visible from across a garden, because the eye reads a set of parallel lines with far more precision than it reads a modelled form. They go in last of all, when the volumes beneath them are final and nothing more will be cut anywhere near them.

This is a modern reading of a bull rather than a naturalistic one: the muscle is smoothed into swelling volumes and the hair is cut back to grooves. It suits plain surroundings for that reason - dressed stone, render, mown grass, gravel, a paved courtyard - and it fights with busy planting, where the simplicity that is the point of it reads as bareness. At 150cm the horns are around chest height and the flank reads from the side. The flank is the face of the piece: show it broadside rather than head-on, and the combed passages will catch a low sun the way nothing else on it does.

A Simplified Animal Needs a Simple Setting

Sixteen to eighteen weeks. Combing the parallel grooves of dewlap, topknot and tail-switch is the last work and the finest. The slab is dressed and its chevron band cut, and the animal roughed standing upon it with the four legs left as columns. The barrel and shoulder volumes are brought down and smoothed, the head and horns after them, and the looping tail freed late because it stands clear on thin stone. The combed grooves of topknot, dewlap and switch are cut at the very end. Bull and slab are one block, and the chevron band is cut rather than applied. Some 1,969kg all told, which a single gantry lift beds onto a prepared footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
