White marble rabbit sitting up with its long ears laid back
Sitting Rabbit White Marble Statue - 120cm $15,30000
Description

A rabbit sits up on its haunches, head raised and turned, the long ears laid back. The forepaws are tucked to the chest and the hind feet lie flat in front, the modelling naturalistic and the surface smooth and unbroken. The ear linings and toes are pink, the eye black and the nose orange - colour laid on, not stone. There is no base: the animal sits on its own haunches and feet. White marble, neutral, smooth and glossy with no veining legible anywhere.

The One Operation That Is Not Carving

Everything on this rabbit is subtraction except the last thing done to it. The ears, the eye and the nose are picked out in colour, and that is a wholly different discipline from cutting stone: it is done freehand, on a surface already polished, with no possibility of correction, because a brushmark that strays onto white marble cannot be lifted off again without dulling the polish underneath. So it is left until the carving is completely finished and signed off, and the boundaries are worked to from inside outward - the deepest part of each ear lining first, the edge last, so that the line where colour meets stone is laid down once and not corrected. The eye is a single touch.

This rabbit has no slab and no plinth - it sits on its own haunches and hind feet, which makes it more like a real animal in a garden and less like a monument, and it needs a flat surface rather than a foundation. At 120cm the raised head comes to about waist height, and it is looked down upon. Grass, a gravel bed, paving, a lawn edge, the foot of a hedge, a wide step. It suits being come upon rather than displayed, half in planting, at the turn of a path. One practical point: the pink, black and orange are applied colour rather than stone, so a piece kept outdoors will want them looked at every few years, which is not true of the marble around them.

No Base, and Where That Puts It

Fourteen to sixteen weeks. Painting the ears, eye and nose is the last operation and the only one that is not carving. The block is squared and the animal roughed sitting within it, the haunches and hind feet left as a solid mass at the bottom. The body and chest come down next, then the head, and the long ears are freed late because they lie back against the shoulders on thin stone. The whole surface is brought to a gloss, and the colour is laid on at the very end. One block throughout with no pin and no filler; only the colour is applied. Only 1,008kg sitting on its own feet, which a gantry beds onto a prepared pad. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Small mammals are scarce in animal sculptures, and lawn-scale pieces sit in garden statues.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
