Description

Seated on a fluted pedestal, a winged lion turns its head outward and opens its jaws. A single wing lifts from the shoulder and folds back across the body in stepped rows of feathers. The head is feline - a blunt muzzle, rounded ears, no beak - so this is a winged lion and not a griffin. Beneath it a rectangular pedestal is cut in shallow vertical fluting over a stepped base. Two tones of one family: a near-black marble animal above a paler grey-white pedestal.

Flutes Before Anything Else

A flute is a shallow concave channel, and a run of them has to be even in width, in depth and in spacing or the eye finds the odd one immediately. They are also completely unreachable once a seated animal stands on top of the pedestal, so they cannot be left until later and they cannot be corrected afterwards. The run is therefore set out with dividers on all four faces before a chisel touches the stone, adjusted until the same whole number fits each face, and then cut with a template drawn along the length rather than judged by eye. On a dark stone this matters more, not less: black marble gives almost no surface information, so a flute is read purely by the line of shadow inside it.

The two stones here do the work between them - a near-black animal reads as a silhouette and the paler pedestal separates it from whatever is behind. That means the background matters less than it usually would, and the piece will hold up against planting, brick or render alike. What it cannot take is a dark background at both ends: against a yew hedge the animal disappears and only the pedestal is left. At 220cm the beast sits far above an adult, and is composed to be looked up at. Black marble takes up heat in sun and shows water marks, so a position that drains and dries suits it.

A Dark Animal on a Pale Base

Twenty to twenty-two weeks. Fluting the pedestal faces opens the work, since a run of flutes cannot be reached once a beast sits above it. The courses are dressed, the flutes run and the bed proved flat before the animal exists. The beast is then carved from its own darker block: roughed seated, the wing blocked as a solid mass off the shoulder and kept that way through the body work, then haunch and flank brought in. The wing is separated into feather rows late, trailing edge first. Head and open jaw come last of the animal. No pins and no fillers go into the beast; animal and pedestal are bedded, not glued. About 6,214kg for animal and pedestal together, craned in courses onto a poured concrete footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Dark stone beasts are rare through animal sculptures, and pieces at this scale sit in life size large statues.

Production Time

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
