White marble lion seated with head turned and forepaws spread forward
Seated Lion With Spread Paws White Marble Statue - 130cm $18,91100
Description

A lion is seated on its haunches with the head carried round to one side, its mane in long rippled locks that lift from the brow and gather into a deep fringe under the jaw. The forelegs are set forward with the paws spread and the toes separated, and the haunch is drawn under. It sits on a thin slab cut square. The stone is a white marble, veined grey through the slab, with grey shading settled into the deeper cuts of the mane. Two of the model exist, one with its mouth closed and one roaring. Sold individually, so order two for a matching pair.

Toes Are What Get Broken

The paws on this lion are set forward of the body with the toes separated and the claws standing proud, and that makes them the most vulnerable stone on the sculpture - furthest forward, lowest down, and each toe held only where it meets the pad. Nothing breaks them in service. They break in the workshop, and in transit, because they are exactly where a piece gets taken hold of and exactly what a strap bears on. So they are the last thing carved, they are cut with the piece already sitting on the bed it will be crated from, and the separations between the toes are opened only as far as the shadow needs - deep enough to read from standing height, no deeper.

The head is turned to one side rather than facing forward, which means the piece has a front and it is not where the body points. Work out which way the head looks and let people come from that direction: along a path rather than up to it, past a border rather than at the end of one. At 130cm seated it is a little under chest height, so the spread paws are at knee level and get looked at - keep them clear of mower lines and gravel wash. Set it on paving, a step or a firm bed; the thin slab needs no plinth. White marble reads best against brick or dark planting.

Turned, So Approach From the Side It Faces

Twelve to fourteen weeks. The slab is squared before anything else and the animal blocked out sitting on it, the forelegs left as a single mass running forward with no paws yet distinguished in it. The haunch and body are finished, then the mane: outer locks first and inward, with the throat fringe undercut after the rest of it is clear. The head is turned late, once the body is stable and will not be moved again. The forelegs are then brought down to shape and the paws divided last of all, toe by toe, with the sculpture already standing on its shipping bed. Neither animal nor slab is pinned, filled or joined; both come out of the same block. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Around 1,282kg in one piece, taken in by gantry and bedded on a prepared concrete footing.

More seated beasts sit in animal sculptures, and classical work under classic sculptures.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
