White marble lion seated and roaring with its forepaws spread on a flat slab
Seated Lion With Spread Forepaws Marble Statue - 210cm $30,59200
Description

Seated on a slab cut square, a lion raises and turns its head above spread forepaws. The mane is cut in long deep locks that lift in a crest at the crown and fall in a broad curtain over the chest, and the toes of both forepaws are separated with the claws standing proud. The stone is a bright white marble carrying only faint grey drift within the slab. The two versions are unalike in pose: the head turns to one side in the first and to the other in the second, and the mane falls differently for it.

Two Extremities Pulling Opposite Ways

This animal has its head up and back and its paws forward and down, and both are at the limit of the block. That is a scheduling problem more than a carving one. The head cannot be finished early, because the piece must still be turned and a raised head is what a turned piece lands on; the paws cannot be finished early either, because they are the lowest and most forward stone and every strap and every lift bears on them. So both are left as solid masses for far longer than the middle of the animal, the body is completed between them, and the two ends are released at the very end - the head first, then the toes, with the sculpture already standing on the bed it will be crated from.

At this height the raised head is the whole composition and it is meant to be seen against sky rather than against a wall - set close under something the upward line stops dead. Give it an open aspect and a long approach: a drive, a lawn, the head of a broad flight, a gateway with air above it. At 210cm the raised head is far overhead, so the piece is met from a distance first. Keep the spread paws clear of mower lines and gravel wash, since they sit at knee height and are the first thing to take a knock. Bright white marble needs a dark background.

Read From a Distance First

Twenty to twenty-two weeks. Levelling the square slab opens the work, then the seated body rises on it with paws still undivided. The haunch and body are finished while both extremities are still solid. The crown crest is lifted first and the chest curtain opened downward after it. The chest curtain is undercut once the crest above it stands clear. The head is then raised and turned, and the forepaws divided toe by toe afterwards, claws last of all, with the piece already sitting on its shipping bed so nothing finished has to be lifted against. There is no pinning and no filler in the animal, nor any joint within the slab. Roughly 5,404kg for one piece, craned into position on a poured footing beneath it. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Bright white carving gathers in animal sculptures, and the largest of it under life size large statues.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
