Description

A lion sits square to the front on a moulded pedestal with its mouth closed and its expression level rather than roaring. The mane is cut in long parallel waves falling symmetrically either side of the face to the chest, the forelegs are straight and the paws are set side by side at the front edge. The pedestal carries a run of leaf moulding under the cap and another above the stepped base. The marble is white with grey veining through the pedestal and the shoulders.

A Closed Mouth Leaves Nowhere to Hide

Almost every carved lion roars, and an open jaw does a lot of work for the carver: it draws the eye, it creates deep shadow, and it makes the animal read as fierce before anyone looks at the rest of the face. Close the mouth and all of that goes. The expression then rests entirely on the brow ridge, the set of the lids, the line where the lips meet and the breadth of the muzzle - four quiet things, each only a few millimetres of stone, and any one of them slightly wrong makes the animal look vacant rather than calm. So the face is the last thing carved and the slowest, and it is worked with the piece stood upright at its finished height so the carver sees it from where it will actually be seen.

A calm lion does a different job from a roaring one. It reads as settled rather than warning, which makes it easier to live with somewhere people pass every day - a front entrance, a courtyard, the head of steps, either side of a doorway. Because the pose is frontal and symmetrical it is composed to be met square on and loses most of its effect from the side. At 215cm on its pedestal the head sits above eye level, and the face is cut to be read from below rather than level with it. White marble with grey veining carries well against brick, render and dark planting.

A Level Gaze at an Entrance

Eighteen to twenty weeks. The pedestal is cut first and its two runs of leaf moulding worked - one above the stepped base and the other under the cap - each run carried round all four faces so the mitres meet. The lion is carved from its own block, roughed seated and frontal. Because the pose is symmetrical the two sides of the mane are cut in parallel rather than one being completed and then matched to it, since a face carved to the front shows any inequality at once. The forelegs and paws are brought to the front edge next. The face is left until last and cut with the piece standing at full height: brow, lids, lip line and muzzle, in that order, with long pauses to look. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Around 5,799kg across two parts, craned in order onto a prepared concrete foundation.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
