White marble lion seated and roaring high on a tall plain pedestal
Seated Lion on a Plain Pedestal Marble Statue - 200cm $30,66200
Description

Raised on a tall plain pedestal, a lion sits with its head up and its paws set square. The mane is cut in long rippled locks that sweep out either side of the face and fall in a heavy fringe to the chest. Beneath is a tall pedestal with a projecting stepped cap and a stepped base and no carved ornament at all. The marble is white, with faint grey veining drifting down the pedestal shaft alone. The two versions differ in the mouth alone: one open, one closed.

A Plain Pedestal Puts Everything on the Animal

A carved pedestal absorbs weeks and it also absorbs attention: a viewer's eye spends time on acanthus and gadroons that it would otherwise spend on the lion. Take the ornament away and the animal has nowhere to hide. So the schedule shifts - almost none of it goes on the base, and what is saved there is spent on the mane and the face, which are cut deeper and finished finer than they would be on a piece with a decorated plinth. The pedestal itself then has only one demand, and it is exacting: its faces must be truly flat and its arrises truly straight, because there is no ornament anywhere to distract from a line that wanders.

A plain pedestal is quieter than a carved one and it suits places a carved one would crowd: a modern house, a courtyard with clean lines, a terrace where the architecture is already doing the talking. It also reads as more height than the measurement suggests, because nothing interrupts the shaft. At 200cm the animal sits above an adult, so the plain pedestal keeps the eye moving upward. Set it where the plain faces catch light from one side - flat frontal light on an unornamented block gives the eye nothing at all. White marble wants something dark behind it.

Height Without Decoration

Eighteen to twenty weeks, and the balance of that is unusual. Squaring the plain pedestal is quick, and almost the whole schedule belongs to the animal above it. The faces are dressed flat and the arrises run true, the beds proved against each other, and then the base is done. The lion takes the rest: roughed seated on its own block, the forelegs left thick at the cap edge, haunch and flank brought in. Rippled locks are opened either side of the face before the fringe beneath is undercut. The head is raised late and the face cut at the end, with the piece standing at full height so the carver sees it from where it will be seen. The lion carries no pins and no fillers; pedestal and cap are bedded, not glued. Roughly 4,668kg for the single lion and its pedestal, both craned onto a poured footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Plainer pedestals appear across animal sculptures, and pieces at this height under large garden statues.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
