Seated Lion Looking Up With a Sphere Marble Statue - 120cm $18,77200
Description

A lion sits back on its haunches with its head lifted and turned to one side and its jaws open, one forepaw resting on top of a sphere set on the slab beside it. The mane is cut in long smooth waves that fall well below the chest, the hind leg is folded under and the tail curls round the haunch. It sits on a slab with a roughly chiselled edge. The marble is white and left matte, with soft grey shading gathered in the recesses of the mane.

A Head Turned Off the Axis

A seated lion is normally carved symmetrically, which gives the carver a free check: anything wrong on one side of the face shows up against the other. This one lifts its head and turns it, and that check disappears. Every lock of the mane now runs a different length on the near side from the far side, the jaw opens across the axis rather than along it, and the only way to keep the head convincing is to work it against measured points taken from the shoulders rather than by eye. The neck is also short on a seated animal, so the turn has to be found in a small amount of stone - which is why the head is roughed early, with spare material left at the throat, and refined only at the end.

This lion is left matte rather than polished, so its detail comes from shadow instead of reflection, and it holds up in shade where a glossy stone would go flat. The head is lifted and turned, which means the face is composed for a viewer standing off to one side and slightly above - so set it on the ground or a low step rather than on a plinth, and approach it from the side it is looking towards. At 120cm seated it comes to about waist height. The chisel-dressed slab edge lets it sit into gravel or planting without a made-up base.

Matte White, Set Below Eye Level

Eleven to thirteen weeks. The slab is cut first and the sphere blocked out on it as a cube in one corner, then the animal roughed seated beside it. The head is roughed early with spare stone at the throat, because the lift and the turn have to be found in a short neck and cannot be adjusted once the mane is cut. Measured points are taken off the shoulders and used throughout, since the pose gives no symmetry to check against. The mane is worked outward to inward, longer on the near side than the far one. The ball is worked down from its cube by halving the facets over and over, and the paw resting on it is cut during the same sessions, so neither has to be adjusted to suit the other afterwards. The surface is finished matte by hand and the slab edge dressed last. Nothing is pinned or filled - lion, sphere and slab come from one block. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Around 1,008kg in one piece, lifted by gantry and bedded on a prepared concrete footing.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
