Two-tone pink marble lion seated with a pale cream mane
Seated Lion in Two-Tone Pink Marble Statue - 170cm $23,77800
Description

Settled on an oval plate, a lion sits with its tail curled round beside it and the tip flicked up. The modelling is naturalistic rather than heraldic - shoulder and haunch read as anatomy, and the face is calm with the mouth closed. The mane falls in long soft waves. One stone gives two tones: an apricot-pink body against a pale cream mane and tail tip. A single animal is what is being sold, and one price covers it.

Landing the Pale Band on the Mane

This stone has two colours in it and they are not distributed to order: a pale cream bed runs through an apricot-pink body, and wherever the carving crosses that bed the colour changes. The whole skill is in deciding where the change falls. Land it across the face and the animal looks piebald; land it on the mane, the chest fringe and the tail tip and it looks like a lion with a pale mane, which is what nature does. Long soft waves are eased rather than cut sharp, since the modelling here is anatomical. So the block is turned wet, repeatedly, before a single cut - and once the decision is made the whole animal is set out from the bed rather than from the block, which means the pose is fitted to the stone instead of the stone being fitted to the pose.

This lion is modelled from the animal rather than from heraldry, so it holds up from every angle instead of having a front - the shoulder from the side, the haunch from behind and the chest from the front are all worth looking at. That makes it a piece for the middle of somewhere rather than the edge: a lawn, a wide terrace, a courtyard, the centre of a gravel turning circle. At 170cm the seated animal reaches an adult's chest, close enough for the anatomy to tell. The two-tone stone is at its best in even light; strong raking sun adds a second pattern that fights the colour change.

Anatomy Rewards Walking Round It

Sixteen to eighteen weeks, and the first days go on the block rather than the carving. Choosing where the pale bed falls governs everything here, and the block is turned wet until the mane lands in it. The oval plate is then cut and the seated mass roughed on it, haunch drawn under and forelegs straight. The body is modelled anatomically, shoulder and flank read as muscle rather than as pattern. The mane follows, worked into the pale bed, and the tail is cut round beside the animal with the tip flicked clear last. The face is finished at the end, calm and closed-mouthed, which leaves it nowhere to hide. No pins, no dowels and no fillers appear in either the animal or its oval plate. Roughly 2,867kg for the single animal, craned across and bedded onto a poured footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
