Description

A sailfish rises almost vertically from carved water, its long bill pointing up. The sail dorsal fin is raised and fully fanned behind the head - a great combed screen of stone with every ray cut as a separate quill - and the pectoral fins are spread and combed the same way. The body is smooth and streamlined and the tail drops back into the water, which is cut as a smooth swept form with a single sharp crest rather than as breaking foam. White marble crossed throughout by blue veining - not grey - in fine branching threads.

A Sail Set Out From One Root

The raised sail is most of this carving and all of its difficulty. Every ray springs from a single root along the back and fans outward, which means the whole screen is a radial arrangement - and the eye reads radial work with extraordinary precision. One ray a degree out of true, or a hand's width longer than the ray beside it, and the fan looks buckled rather than spread. So the root line is struck first, the ray positions stepped off along it, and each ray is scribed from that root outward before any stone is removed. They are then cut in opposed pairs from the centre out, so left and right are always worked in the same session and can be compared as they go. The webbing between rays is hollowed last.

The stone in this piece is unusual in the range: the veining is genuinely BLUE rather than grey - a fine branching network of cool threads through an otherwise neutral white - and it is a quiet effect that needs the right conditions to be seen at all. At 200cm the bill tip goes well overhead and the sail fills the space beneath it. It shows best in cool even daylight and against a neutral background; warm evening light kills it, and so does a background of foliage. So a north-facing terrace, a courtyard, a pale paved surround or a position near water suits it far better than a sunny border. And keep it within a few paces of where people walk, because at distance the veins vanish and the piece reads as plain white.

Blue Veining, and What Shows It

Twenty to twenty-two weeks. Setting out the sail's rays from a single root keeps the fan from buckling as it opens. The swept wave form is blocked as one solid mass and the fish roughed rising almost vertically from it. The body is brought down smooth and streamlined, then the sail's root line struck along the back and every ray scribed from it before stone is removed. The rays are cut in opposed pairs from the centre outward and the webbing hollowed between them. The bill is left oversized until the very end. Nothing in fish, sail or wave is pinned, dowelled or filled - one stone. Some 4,668kg for fish and wave, craned upright onto a poured concrete foundation. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Billfish are rare within animal sculptures, and the tallest of them under large garden statues.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
