Red to Clear Graduated Scholar's Rock Resin Sculpture - 76cm $2,15900
Description

Overall this resin scholar's rock is a compact upright on a deep, square marble block. The colour runs vertically and covers the whole range: a strong orange-red holds the foot and the middle of the mass, thins through a pale rose, and gives out entirely at the crown, which is colourless. Two round openings are cut through the upper middle.

A Red Foot Giving Out at a Colourless Crown

The gradient does two things at once. It weights the piece, because the eye reads the dense red at the base as the heaviest part and the clear crown as almost weightless, so a fairly compact rock looks as though it is rising. And it separates the modelling into two readings: through the red the hollows and ripples show as darker and lighter passages of colour, while in the colourless crown the same modelling shows only as bright edges and shadow. The two openings sit at the join, in the pale rose, where they are legible against both. Around them the surface is worked into deep vertical hollows with sharp folded edges, and the crown breaks into a group of short spurs that lean to one side. The transition is streaked rather than clean, so the red carries up into the crown in threads.

At 76cm it suits a console, a study shelf or a plinth, and it holds a room on its own. A pale wall behind suits it, since the red end has all the weight it needs and the clear crown reads best against something light. Warm light suits the red and a cold downlight kills it. Give the two openings a little space behind and place it so the crown's spurs lean into the room rather than the wall. Indoor use only.

Where the Red Gives Out, and the Deeper Block

As standard the build runs 3–4 weeks, and as a bespoke commission 5–6. The height at which the colour runs out is the decision that changes this most: held to the foot alone it reads as a clear rock on a red base, taken to two thirds as here it reads as a graduated object, and carried all the way up it becomes a solid red piece and loses the point of the gradient. The direction can also be reversed, with the colour held at the crown, which most buyers find less convincing. On colour: this orange-red is standard, and blue, green or amber can be cast instead. The two openings run from one to four. The marble block on this model is deep and square, which is worth allowing for when measuring a shelf, and a shallower block is fitted on request. It ships with the block fitted, boxed with the crown spurs packed out separately, and one person can carry it. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A red rock giving out at a colourless crown belongs with our abstract sculptures; two round openings set where the colour pales join it to our organic sculptures, and orange-red thinning through rose to clear suits our resin sculptures.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
