Description

A horse rears upon its hind legs, both forelegs raised and its mouth open. The mane falls along the neck in long crimped waves and the tail sweeps down to the base. A carved stump and a mass of drapery gather beneath the hind legs and take their weight. It stands on an oval base with a plain rounded edge. Deep honey-brown marble, paler beige where the light catches it, dark flow-banding beneath a faint translucence.

The Stump Is the Leg That Holds It Up

A horse rearing on two legs is not standing on two legs. Marble has no tension to speak of, and an animal of this weight balanced on two hind cannons would crack across them at the first frost or the first knock. The stump and drapery mass behind is not decoration and not a period affectation - it is the third leg, and it is sized for the job before it is made to look like vegetation. That governs the whole schedule: the mass is left at full thickness until the very end, so the carver is working around a block of surplus stone for months, and only once the body above is finished and its true weight is known does the stump get cut back to the shape seen here. Cut it to size early and there is nothing left to correct with.

Honey-brown marble is the strongest colour in this tranche and it wants a background it can separate from. Pale render, limestone, light gravel and clipped green all work; what does not is red brick, terracotta or a bed of copper beech, where the stone and the backdrop meet in the same register and the modelling disappears. At 160cm the raised forelegs come to head height and the animal reads from below. The flow-banding runs strongest through the barrel and the haunch, so a position that shows the flank rather than the chest gets more of the stone. Low sun warms it further and flattens the banding; flat light is where it reads best.

A Warm Stone That Needs Its Own Wall

Eighteen to twenty weeks. Leaving the stump and drapery mass full thickness governs the schedule, since the hind legs lean their whole weight on it. The oval base is turned and its edge rounded, then the animal roughed above it with the raised forelegs kept as heavy stubs. The barrel, the arched neck and the open mouth follow. The crimped mane is laid out in long waves down the neck and cut late, because a crimp once cut cannot be re-spaced. The stump and drapery are brought to their final section last of all, once the body's weight is settled. Neither the rearing figure nor its oval base carries a pin, a dowel or any filler. Some 2,390kg for figure and base together, craned across and bedded onto a prepared footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
