Description

A Bactrian camel lies couchant with its head turned back over the shoulder. Both humps stand up and tuft at the crown, and a heavy ruff falls from jaw to chest in long waved locks cut clear of one another. The tail curls tight at the near haunch. There is no saddle-cloth and no harness anywhere - the animal is left entirely plain. It lies on a thin rectangular slab. Brilliant white marble crossed by soft blue-grey veining in fine branching threads.

Nothing to Hide Behind

Ornament is forgiving. A medallion, a girth strap, a fringed cloth all give the eye somewhere to go, and a passage of modelling that is merely adequate will pass unnoticed beside them. This animal has none of that: no cloth, no harness, no banding anywhere, so every square inch of it is the modelling of a camel and nothing else. That makes it the harder of the two to carve well and the easier to carve badly. The consequence in the workshop is that far more time goes into the transitions - the fall of the neck into the shoulder, the set of the folded knees, the way the hump roots meet the back - because those are what a viewer with nothing else to look at will look at.

This is the plain twin of our medallion camel, and the choice between them is really a choice about sightlines. Where a piece is seen from above and close to, the ornamented one gives more. Where it is seen in profile, from across a lawn or along a terrace, the silhouette is all that survives the distance and the ornament is wasted - and this is the one to have. At 120cm the turned head sits low, so the whole animal is met looking down. A lawn, a long border, a courtyard, the length of a terrace, a gravel forecourt. The blue-grey veining is fine and branching and reads at close range only, so it is a bonus rather than a reason.

The Version for a Profile

Sixteen to eighteen weeks - the same as the ornamented version, the time going into modelling rather than ornament. With no cloth or harness anywhere, the whole piece rests on the modelling of the beast. The slab is dressed and the animal roughed lying upon it, the folded legs a solid mass and both humps blocks. The barrel is brought down and then reworked: the neck-into-shoulder fall, the set of the knees and the hump roots are each taken further than they would be under a cloth. The head, turned back over the shoulder, is cut once the barrel is settled, and the throat ruff undercut last. Nothing on this animal is applied, pinned or filled - it is one block and no more. Only 1,008kg all told, which a gantry will bed onto a prepared footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
