Description

A winged horse rears from a bank of carved waves, forelegs lifted and head turned outward. The mane is cut in short flame-like locks, both wings sweep back from the shoulders in long tiered rows of feathers, and the tail streams out behind. The water beneath is cut as stylised scrolls curling into volutes, more pattern than sea. The whole stands on a plain stepped plinth. White marble, faint grey drift crossing the wave scrolls and the plinth beneath.

Fitting a Rearing Horse Down Onto Finished Water

The order here is the opposite of what it looks like. The animal appears to spring from the water, so the instinct is to carve the animal and let the water gather beneath it. In practice the wave bank is blocked out and brought close to its finish first, because it is the piece's whole structural base and the figure has to be seated down onto something that will not move afterwards. The rearing body is then cut to meet a surface that already exists, which means every hoof, fetlock and trailing hind leg is fitted to a fixed line rather than the line being adjusted to suit them. The two wings are the last major cut and the most careful: each is a wide sail of stone standing clear on one edge, and they are thinned in alternation so the piece never carries a heavy wing on one side and a finished one on the other.

A rearing winged horse is a piece of theatre and it is wasted where it can only be seen from one side. At 200cm the rearing head sits well overhead, which is what the pose is composed for. Give it a circuit: an island in a turning circle, the centre of a lawn, the head of a formal walk, a courtyard that can be crossed. The profile carries the wings and the profile is what most people will see first, so face it across the line of approach rather than along it. Near water it doubles, and the carved waves beneath make that reading explicit. It holds its own against render, brick, clipped hedge or gravel; what it will not do is sit quietly in a border.

A Piece That Wants an Approach

Twenty-four to twenty-six weeks, the longest in this tranche. Blocking the wave bank solid comes first, because the rearing figure has to be fitted down onto a finished mass. The plinth is dressed and the wave scrolls cut and hollowed to their volutes, then left. The horse is roughed above them, the barrel and haunches first, and the rearing forelegs held as thick stubs for as long as possible. The head and the flame-cut mane follow. Both wings are thinned in alternation, feather rows laid out from the shoulder outward so the tiers stay even, and the streaming tail is undercut last. Figure, waves and plinth take no pins and no fillers, the plinth bedded dry beneath. Some 4,668kg between figure and plinth, craned in two lifts onto a poured concrete footing.   • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
