The tortoise in this cast resin sculpture stands on four short scaled legs with its head out and its mouth open. Its shell is the piece: a border of interlocking square fret runs right round the rim, and above it the dome rises into a heaped mass of raised scrolls that curl like cloud. The plating runs green through the neck and around the rim of the shell and warms to a deep amber across the middle of the back, the muzzle and the legs.
A fret pattern is made of straight lines and a shell is a dome, which is the awkward combination. Every square in the border has to keep its angle as the surface curves away, and a line that stays true to the tool rather than to the shell arrives visibly crooked by the time it has travelled a hand's width; so the border is set out in short runs and each is cut to the curve rather than across it. The scrollwork above is the opposite problem and the slower one: it is a continuous mass with no repeat, so there is nothing to check a mistake against, and it is worked from the centre outwards, the outermost curls cut last and undercut clear of the dome behind them.
Everything on this animal is on top of it, so it wants a surface below eye level where the shell can be looked down on: a low chest, a hearth or a broad step. From standing height above a console you see the shell and not the head, which is a fair view but not the whole piece. Raking light from above drops a shadow into each scroll, and that is what makes the carving read; flat light turns the dome into a patch of colour. Give it a plain surface.
Expect 3–4 weeks for a standard piece and 5–6 weeks where the commission is bespoke. What sits on the shell is open: this scrollwork, a plain dome, or a single creature on a smooth back. The plating is made in this green to amber, in a blue to green, in a rose to gold, or as a single flat colour, and a clear body with no plating at all is offered. The fret border can be cut deeper or left off. Any scale is cut to order. Pieces bought together go through the plating in one run so their grades agree. Delivery is a single fitted crate with nothing to fit; one person can carry it, holding the shell and not a leg. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.
A tortoise with a carved shell belongs with our animal sculptures; a dome heaped with curling scrolls leads to our classic sculptures, and plating graded from green to amber joins our resin sculptures.

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.
Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.
Production time is separate from delivery time.
Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.
Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.
All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.
Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.
For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.
Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.
For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.
If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.
Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.
Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.
To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.
Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:
Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.
This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
If you have questions about shipping, customs, delivery timing, or anything else before you order, our team is here to help. Contact us via WhatsApp, email, or phone, and we'll respond within 24 hours.
