Matt Red Open Curl on Marble Resin Sculpture - 76cm
Matt Red Open Curl on Marble Resin Sculpture - 76cm $4,99700
Description

A matt red curl, opening from a closed foot into a wide mouth. The surface is continuous from foot to rim and the rate of opening changes as it rises, nearly shut for the first third and quickest through the middle. Below it are a disc and a slab of black marble, both part of the piece.

A Form That Opens as It Rises

The piece is one continuous surface that changes from closed to open over its own height, and the difficulty is that both states have to be believable at the same time. If the foot is drawn too tight the curl looks like a shell with a lid; if the mouth is opened too far the whole thing flattens into a dish standing on its edge. What holds it together is that the rate of opening is not constant. The form stays nearly closed for the first third, opens quickly through the middle, and then slows again at the rim, so the eye reads a movement with a beginning and an end rather than a cone. The matt red is chosen against a polish for a reason particular to this shape: a curl has a deep interior, and a gloss surface fills that interior with reflected room until the inside reads as brighter than the outside, which turns the form inside out.

At 76cm on its stone it is floor work or a piece for a low broad table where it can be looked into. The mouth is the object and it faces one way, so it wants a position with a clear approach from that side rather than a spot to be walked around. Light from above does most for it, since the interior is deep and a side light leaves half the mouth in shadow. The stone needs a level surface and a clear margin on the open side.

The Mouth, the Matt Red, and Delivery

Delivery follows a 3–4 week build as standard, or a 5–6 week build if bespoke. The mouth is opened further, the red is run toward purple, and the stone is offered in other finishes. The stone beneath is also cut in other finishes and thicknesses, and the curl is made at other heights on this arrangement. A gloss finish is offered and is worth thinking about carefully on this form, for the reason above: it makes a brighter object and a less legible one. It travels as two crated items, the casting bedded on its closed foot with the rim packed out, and two people take it by the body rather than by the mouth, which is the thinnest section. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A curl opening from a closed foot is organic sculpture; the matt red is carried in resin sculpture; and a mouth this wide is indoor sculpture placing.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
