Large Contemporary Chimpanzee on Books with Skull Bronze Sculpture - 220cm $123,29000
Description

The Large Contemporary Chimpanzee on Books with Skull Bronze Sculpture stands at a commanding 220cm, presenting a seated chimpanzee raised on a stack of open books, one hand lifting a human skull to eye level while the other rests beneath its chin in a gesture of deep contemplation. The composition is immediately arresting: part philosophical provocation, part masterwork of figurative bronze casting.

Cast Bronze, Hand-Finished

This piece is produced using the traditional lost-wax casting method, which allows the foundry to capture every strand of fur, every crease in the ape's brow, and the anatomical precision of the skull with extraordinary fidelity. The surface carries a mixed warm brown and green verdigris patina, with darker oxidation pooling in the recessed fur and the spines of the open books beneath the figure. The open pages of the lower books are rendered with visible text detailing, adding a layer of narrative weight to the sculpture's base. This is gallery-grade bronze casting at monumental scale, with a finished weight of 1,000kg that speaks to the density and permanence of the material.

At over two metres tall, this sculpture commands any setting with the authority it deserves. It works with equal conviction in grand institutional interiors, hotel lobbies, corporate atriums, and open-air courtyards or landscaped estates. The warm brown patina reads beautifully against pale stone, rendered brick, or mature planting. Its intellectual character makes it a natural anchor for library spaces, reading rooms, and spaces designed around ideas.

Handmade to Order, Fully Customisable

We can adjust the patina finish to suit your interior palette, from a lighter honey-brown to a deeper near-black oxidation or a classic verde antique. Scale variants are available on request, and the piece can be commissioned in smaller editions for residential settings. The thematic composition, a contemplative ape studying a human skull over a throne of books, is open to interpretation as a Darwin reference, a Hamlet allusion, or simply a meditation on knowledge and mortality. We are happy to discuss inspired adaptations of this concept, including interpretations inspired by the work of Louis Matini. Contact us before ordering to discuss your requirements.
