Description

A horse's head and neck rise out of a rough block of stone left entirely unworked. The muzzle, the flared nostril, the open eye and both pricked ears are all finished, and the mane is cut in thick separated locks along the crest. The head is fully modelled and the block below the throat is left exactly as it split. Below the throat the carving simply stops and becomes raw split stone, running down as an irregular tapering mass to a flat footing. White marble near neutral, grey veining stronger through the rough split block.

Deciding Where the Carving Stops

Leaving part of a block raw is not the same as leaving it unfinished, and the difference is decided before any stone comes off. The line where the modelled neck gives way to split rock has to fall where it looks inevitable - too high and the head appears to be drowning in the block, too low and the raw stone reads as a plinth someone forgot to dress. So the transition is marked on the raw block first, and the head is then carved down to meet a boundary that already exists. The raw faces themselves are split rather than sawn, in one pass, and never touched again: go back to tidy a patch and it stops reading as fracture and starts reading as tooling, which destroys the whole conceit.

This is a modern piece in a range that is mostly classical, and it does not sit comfortably among naturalistic statuary - the raw block is an argument about carving itself, and it needs neighbours that can take part in it or none at all. At 250cm the head is far overhead, and the raw block carries it there. A gallery wall, a modern forecourt, a stair hall, a courtyard of plain dressed stone, the end of a long lawn. Set it where the split faces catch raking light rather than flat light: the whole bottom half of the piece is texture, and in flat light it goes dead while the polished head above keeps working.

A Contemporary Device at Full Height

Twenty-four to twenty-six weeks. Deciding where the finished carving stops and the raw block begins comes before any cutting at all. The block is stood, the transition line marked on the raw stone, and the head roughed above it - muzzle and jaw first, the ears held as solid stubs. The eye and nostril are cut once the planes of the head are settled, and the mane locks are separated late. The raw faces are split in one pass at the end and left entirely alone. One block throughout, head and rough mass alike, with no pin and no filler. Some 9,118kg in one unbroken block, craned in a single lift onto a poured concrete foundation. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Busts sit apart from the full figures in animal sculptures, and contemporary work in geometric sculptures.

Production Time

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
