Description

A horse's head and upper neck are carved as a bust, the muzzle fine and dropped. The nostril is flared, the eye open under a heavy brow and both ears pricked forward. The mane lifts from the crest in long ribbon-like locks, each undercut clear of the next. Each lock is cut as a separate band sweeping back and down in a deep undercut curl. The neck is cut off cleanly at the base and seats onto a low hexagonal socle. White marble near neutral, grey veining drifting through cheek, neck and socle.

Mane Ribbons Set Out Before the Neck Is Rounded

The mane is nine-tenths of the work on this bust and it has one unforgiving property: the locks have to be evenly spaced along the crest, and the crest is a curve. Mark the spacing on a rounded neck and the locks crowd where the curve tightens and open where it eases, which reads as carelessness rather than as hair. So the neck is left square-sided while the crest line is struck and the lock positions stepped off along it with a measure, and only then is the neck rounded, following the marks rather than cutting across them. Each ribbon is then undercut clear of the one behind it, working from the outermost inward, so that the deepest and most fragile curls are cut when there is nothing left to knock them against.

A bust is a fragment by design and it reads as one - the neck cut off square announces that you are looking at part of an animal rather than a small whole one. At 180cm the muzzle comes to about head height, which is where a bust wants to be. Get that height right and it works; stand it on the floor and it reads as a head that has fallen off something. So it belongs on a plinth, a pier, a console, a hall table, a broad sill - anywhere that lifts the muzzle to about the height of your own face. Set it where the mane is lit from the side, since the whole of that work is shadow between ribbons.

A Bust Wants to Be Met at Head Height

Eighteen to twenty weeks. Setting out the mane ribbons before the neck is rounded keeps their spacing from crowding. The socle is dressed and the bust roughed above it with the neck left square-sided, the crest line struck and the lock positions stepped off along it. The neck is then rounded to those marks. Head, muzzle and brow follow, the ears held as stubs until late. The mane ribbons are undercut from the outermost inward at the very end. Bust and socle carry no pin, no dowel and no filler at any point at all. Some 3,403kg for bust and socle, craned into place and bedded onto a prepared pad. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
