Pink marble giraffe standing with her calf lying between her legs
Giraffe and Calf Pink Marble Statue - 350cm $59,11800
Description

A giraffe stands with her neck upright and her calf lying at her feet between the legs. Her head is turned out and the calf's own neck is raised beneath her. The reticulated coat pattern is cut as a network of pale hexagons across both animals. They stand on a single thin rectangular slab. Soft rose-pink marble, the hexagon coat pattern left as a network of paler lines. Cow and calf are one group from one block, and both are included in this price.

A Neck at Full Section, Carrying the Head Alone

A giraffe is a column of stone with a head on top and that is the whole engineering problem. The neck is long, it is narrow, it is nearly vertical, and there is nothing beside it to share the load - so the section at its base has to carry everything above it, and the temptation to thin it for elegance is the one temptation that must be refused. It is blocked at full section and kept there while the body, the legs and the whole of the calf are brought to finish beneath, so that the piece spends months with a deliberately heavy neck. Only at the end is it taken down, and only to the section the arithmetic allows rather than the one the eye would prefer. At 25 tonnes there is no margin anywhere for optimism.

Nothing else in this range comes close to it for size. The next tallest thing we make does not reach three metres, and this one carries well past three and a half; the weight climbs in step with it. That makes it a decision to take before ordering rather than after delivery. At 350cm the head is more than twice your height, which no other piece here approaches. It wants an engineered foundation, a heavy-haul delivery and an approach a crane can reach; and it wants a setting with room, because at this height it will dominate anything it shares a view with. A parkland lawn, the end of a long axis, a hotel forecourt, a courtyard of real size. The rose-pink stone is the other reason to give it space: it is the only pink piece at this scale and it will not sit quietly beside white marble.

Nothing Else Here Is This Size

Thirty to thirty-four weeks, the longest lead time in the range. Blocking the upright neck at full section governs everything, since it carries the head alone. The slab is dressed and both animals set out on it together, because the calf lies between the cow's legs and neither can be moved once roughed. The cow's body and the calf entire are brought down first, the neck held at full section throughout. The hexagon network is laid out over both animals from the shoulder outward so the pattern runs continuously. The neck is taken to its final section at the very end. Neither cow nor calf nor slab takes a pin, a dowel or any filler at all. Fully 25,019kg, which is a heavy-haul lift onto an engineered poured concrete foundation. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Tall animals are few among animal sculptures, and the greatest of them under large garden statues.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
