Description

A gorilla stands on all fours, head raised, its knuckles resting on the slab. The animal is cut into flat triangular planes meeting at sharp arrises, not modelled. Shoulder, back, haunch and forearm are each resolved into planes, and the face is faceted too, though the brow, eyes and nostrils are cut naturalistically within it. Both forelimbs rest on their knuckles. A thin rectangular slab carries it. The stone is a white marble whose grey veining runs in strong diagonals over back, haunch and slab alike.

Knuckles True to One Plane

A gorilla on all fours does not stand on its palms, it stands on the knuckles of both forelimbs - and that is the whole load path for the front half of two tonnes of marble. The four knuckle faces have to finish dead level with each other and with the two hind feet, on one plane, or the animal rocks; and because they are faceted rather than modelled there is no soft surface to take up the difference. They are therefore cut early, while the limbs are still oversized, brought to one plane with a straightedge across all four, and then protected for the rest of the job. Every facet above them is worked to that datum rather than to the slab.

The veining in this block is the boldest in the tranche, and faceting is the treatment that shows it best: each flat plane presents an unbroken area of stone, so a vein crosses it whole instead of being wrapped away round a curve. At 150cm the raised head is near chest height and meets you almost square on. That argues for close approach and raking light - a courtyard, a modern entrance, a terrace, a hall - rather than distance, where the faceting reads as roughness and the veining disappears. It sits with contemporary architecture and quarrels with a planted border, where hard arrises argue against everything soft.

Faceting Reads the Veining Whole

Sixteen to eighteen weeks. Cutting the knuckles of both forelimbs true to one plane governs how the whole animal stands. The slab is dressed and the animal roughed deliberately over-square and blocky, because faceting works by slicing planes away from a prism and never by softening a curve. The knuckle faces are brought to a single datum plane early and protected. The large planes of back and haunch follow, each taken down in flat passes and checked across both diagonals, and the face is cut last. Every facet is cut and none is cast; the gorilla takes no pin and no filler. Some 1,969kg as one faceted mass, gantry-borne and bedded onto a prepared footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Primates are scarce through animal sculptures, and faceted form fills geometric sculptures.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
