Faceted Gorilla Head Marble Bust - 120cm $14,81400
Description

A gorilla's head and shoulders are carved as a bust, cut into flat triangular planes. The brow ridge, the flattened nose with its flared nostrils, the deep-set eyes and the heavy jaw are each resolved into planes meeting at sharp arrises, and the crest of the skull rises to a faceted ridge. The shoulders below are cut as large plain planes and the whole sits on an integral faceted block with no separate plinth. White marble near neutral, grey veining branching across the faceted brow and shoulder.

A Faceted Skull With Real Eyes In It

Faceting a head is harder than faceting a body because a face has to keep working as a face. Flat planes describe a shoulder perfectly well. Turn an eye socket, a nostril or a lip into polyhedra and the animal stops looking at you and becomes a diagram of a gorilla. So this piece runs two languages at once: the skull, jaw and shoulders are strictly planar, and the eyes and nostrils are modelled naturalistically within them. Where the two meet is decided on the block and not discovered at the socket: the eye recesses are set out as shallow dishes with STRAIGHT-SIDED outer edges, which gives the facets around them a straight edge to finish against instead of a curved one, so the join is settled in advance and never argued over at the socket.

Cutting an animal off at the shoulders is a deliberate act and the eye knows it, which makes the height you set it at matter far more than it would for a complete figure. At 120cm the muzzle is at about chest height and meets you almost square on. At that height it holds together. Put it down at floor level and it starts to look like something that fell off a big statue. It sits on its own integral block, so it needs a plinth, a pier, a console, a broad sill or a low wall under it. Faceting shows the grey veining whole across each flat plane, which is the quiet reward of the piece, so give it raking light and a plain background - against foliage or patterned brick the facets become noise.

A Bust Wants Lifting

Fourteen to sixteen weeks. Reconciling a faceted skull with naturalistic eyes and nostrils is decided on the block. The integral block is squared and the bust roughed above it deliberately over-square, since faceting works by slicing planes off a prism. The eye recesses are set out first with straight-sided outer edges so the surrounding facets have a straight boundary to die into. The large planes of skull, jaw and shoulder follow, each worked flat and checked corner to corner. The nostrils and eyes are modelled last, within a boundary that already exists. Bust and block are one stone; every facet is cut and none of it moulded. Only 1,008kg as one faceted block, which one gantry lift beds onto a prepared pad. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Carved heads sit apart within animal sculptures, and planar work fills geometric sculptures.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
