White marble crocodile cut into flat planes with faceted scutes along its back
Faceted Crocodile White Marble Statue - 50cm $6,46700
Description

A crocodile lies at full stretch, head raised slightly and turned, jaws closed. Every surface is resolved into flat planes, the scutes cut as blunt faceted blocks. The scutes run in staggered rows down back and tail, the jaw and snout are resolved into large flat planes with the teeth as a row of shallow notches, and all four legs splay outward with the toes cut as simple rounded pads. There is no base: the animal lies directly on its own belly and feet. The 50cm is its length, not a height. White marble near neutral, grey veining across the faceted back, flank and tail.

Faceting Something Read From Above

Every other faceted animal we make stands up, and the planes are composed in profile - you read them against the sky as a silhouette with facets inside it. A crocodile lies flat, so nobody ever sees its outline: the whole piece is read from directly overhead, looking down onto a field of planes with no silhouette at all. That changes how it has to be set out. The planes are laid out on the plan rather than the elevation, and their job is to catch light at different angles as the sun moves rather than to describe a profile - which means the arrises have to run across the animal rather than along it, or the whole back reads as one flat grey field at midday.

This is the flattest piece in the range and the only faceted one that is not read as a silhouette. At 50cm along the body this is met from directly over it, not from the side. So it wants a surface you look down onto from close range: paving, gravel, a lawn edge, a wide step, the margin of a pool, a shallow bed of pebbles. It also works half-concealed in low planting, where it is come upon rather than displayed. Two people can shift it at 73kg, so nothing about the placing is final. Unlike our naturalistic crocodile this one wants light coming from somewhere in particular rather than an even shade, because the planes need a direction to catch.

Met From Directly Over It

Ten to twelve weeks, the shortest lead time here. Faceting an animal that lies flat means the planes are read from above, not in profile. A long shallow block is dressed and the animal's outline struck on it in plan, then the whole form roughed as a low over-square mass. The large planes of back and flank are taken down in flat passes with the arrises struck across the animal rather than along it. The faceted scutes are raised from the neck backwards, the jaw planes and notched teeth cut late, and the four legs and rounded toe pads freed last. One piece of stone from snout to tail tip, with no pin and no filler. Just 73kg and liftable by two, which beds onto a prepared pad or any firm floor. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Reptiles are scarce among animal sculptures, and faceted work fills geometric sculptures.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
