White marble cat sitting upright, cut into flat planes with rounded toes
Faceted Cat White Marble Statue - 120cm $15,30000
Description

A cat sits upright with its tail curled round to the near side and its head raised. The animal is cut into flat planes meeting at sharp arrises rather than modelled round. Muzzle, brow, cheeks and ears are each resolved into planes, and chest, shoulder and haunch are faceted the same way. The forepaws and hind feet are cut as simple rounded toes - the only curved forms anywhere on the piece. It sits on a thin rectangular slab. White marble near neutral, grey veining branching over the faceted chest and haunch.

The One Exception, and Why It Stays

Everything on this cat is faceted except its toes, and that inconsistency is deliberate. A paw resolved into flat planes stops reading as a paw - the toes are small, they are close together, and once each is a little polyhedron the whole foot becomes a lump of geometry with no anatomy in it. So the toes are left as simple rounded forms, and the faceting is stopped at the ankle with a clean arris rather than allowed to fade out. That boundary is the difficult part: it has to be a decision the eye can see, not a place where the carver ran out of conviction, which means the last facet above each foot is cut deliberately crisp so the change of language reads as intended.

A faceted surface presents each vein across an unbroken flat plane instead of wrapping it away round a curve, so the grey network in this block reads far more strongly than it would on a modelled animal. At 120cm the head sits at waist to chest height and faces whoever comes up to it. That argues for close approach and raking light: a courtyard, a terrace, a modern entrance, a hall, a paved corner. It sits with contemporary architecture and argues with a planted border, where hard arrises fight everything soft. Keep the background plain - faceted stone against foliage or patterned brick becomes visual noise and the veining disappears.

Each Plane Carries a Vein Entire

Fourteen to sixteen weeks. Keeping the toes rounded while everything else is faceted is a deliberate exception. The slab is dressed and the animal roughed sitting upon it as a deliberately over-square blocky mass, since faceting works by slicing planes off a prism. Chest, shoulder and haunch take their big planes first, worked flat and tested corner to corner before either neighbour is begun. The head planes follow, then the curled tail. The rounded toes are cut last, with the final facet above each foot left crisp. Every facet is cut and none moulded; cat and slab take no pin, no filler. Only 1,008kg for cat and slab, which a gantry will bed onto a prepared pad. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
