White marble bear cut into flat triangular planes, walking with head low
Faceted Bear White Marble Statue - 160cm $21,56000
Description

A bear walks forward with its head low, the whole animal cut into flat triangular planes. Muzzle, shoulder, haunch and flank are each resolved into planes meeting at sharp arrises; the small ears are faceted too and the short tail is a single wedge. It stands on a thin rectangular slab. White marble with grey veining in fine diagonals across flank, haunch and slab.

Every Edge Struck Dead Straight

A modelled animal forgives a great deal, because a surface that is meant to curve can absorb a wandering cut. A faceted one forgives nothing. Every arris where two planes meet is supposed to be a straight line, and the eye reads a straight line with far more precision than it reads a curve - so a facet edge that bows even slightly stops looking like a design decision and starts looking like a mistake. The planes themselves have the same problem: each has to be truly flat, and a plane that dishes catches the light in a way its neighbours do not. So the work is done with straightedge and rule rather than by eye, plane by plane, each taken down in flat passes and checked across both diagonals before its neighbour is begun.

There is an accidental virtue in a faceted piece: because each plane presents a flat unbroken area, the grey veining in the marble reads across it whole rather than being wrapped away round a curve. At 160cm the faceted back sits at chest height, where the planes read one against another. That makes this a piece that rewards raking light and close approach - a terrace, a courtyard, a modern entrance, an interior hall - and one that suits contemporary architecture rather than a planted border, where the hard arrises argue with everything soft around them. Flat light flattens it: give it a direction to catch.

Faceting Shows the Veining Whole

Eighteen to twenty weeks. Striking every facet edge dead straight is the whole of the difficulty, and a curve anywhere reads as a mistake. The slab is dressed and the animal roughed standing upon it as a blocky mass, deliberately over-square, since a faceted form is reached by cutting planes off a prism rather than by rounding. The large planes of body and haunch go in first, each taken down in flat passes and checked across both diagonals. Head, muzzle and ears follow, and the legs are freed last. Every facet is cut, not cast; the bear takes no pin, no dowel and no filler. Some 2,390kg as one faceted mass, craned into place and bedded onto a prepared pad. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Faceted work stands apart from animal sculptures, and planar form belongs to geometric sculptures.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
