Description

Seen in profile, an elephant stands with ears folded back and tusks thrust forward. Scrolling foliage borders the cloth around a central roundel, its edge scalloped where it meets the ear. One carved character occupies the middle of the roundel. It is not set down on this page - we would be supposing at its sense, and a supposition published becomes a supposition repeated. The pedestal beneath runs lotus-petal lobes top and bottom about an acanthus scroll frieze, that frieze picked out pale against the body colour. Salmon-terracotta marble, with cream-white running through the frieze bands and tusks.

Picking Passages Out Pale

The frieze bands on this pedestal are noticeably lighter than the stone around them, and that is not a second material - it is the same block, finished differently. A coloured marble is darkest where it is polished and palest where it is left rough, because a rough surface scatters light instead of letting it into the stone. So the carver polishes the body and the plain courses and deliberately stops short on the frieze, leaving it at a fine abrasive. The difficulty is consistency: the pale passages have to be stopped at the same grade all the way round, or the frieze goes patchy, and there is no way to darken a passage taken too far except to polish the whole thing and start the contrast again.

A salmon-terracotta stone is the one thing in this range that does not need a dark background - it separates from almost anything by hue alone, and it will hold its own against brick, planting, render or gravel. What it does not suit is company: put it beside a white marble piece and the two fight, because the eye reads the colour first and the carving second on both. Give it a position of its own. At 220cm the pedestal carries the whole animal above the eye, and the colour with it. The colour deepens in low sun and cools under an overcast sky.

Colour That Carries

Twenty to twenty-two weeks. Deciding which passages will be picked out pale comes before any cutting, because the frieze depends on it. The lobe bands and the acanthus frieze are cut, then the courses are polished and the frieze deliberately stopped short of polish to hold its paler tone. A separate block gives the animal - set standing, its legs held thick, the body then modelled and the ear folds sunk. The cloth is sunk across the back, its border and roundel cut into it. The trunk and its vessel are the final work. The tusks are worked from a paler stone and seated last. No pin, dowel or filler appears in the beast, and the pedestal beds dry beneath it. About 6,214kg between beast and pedestal, craned in order onto a concrete foundation cast beforehand. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
