Couchant Camel with Saddle-Cloth Marble - 120cm $15,30000
Description

A Bactrian camel lies couchant, legs folded, its head raised and turned outward. The two humps stand upright and tufted, a shaggy ruff is cut in separated waved locks down the throat and the tail curls at the near haunch. A saddle-cloth lies between the humps carrying an ornate medallion with a scalloped fringe. A banded girth strap runs round the barrel behind the shoulder. It lies on a thin rectangular slab. White marble neutral throughout, soft grey veining drifting through barrel and slab.

A Strap That Has to Look Tight

The banded girth running round the barrel behind the shoulder is a harder thing to carve than it looks, and the reason is that a strap has a job. A band cut as a raised ribbon lying on the surface reads as a painted stripe - it sits ON the camel rather than AROUND it. To read as leather pulled tight, the hide either side of it has to swell very slightly over the band and the barrel has to narrow a fraction beneath it, which means the strap cannot be added to a finished flank at all: the compression has to be built into the modelling of the barrel while the barrel is still oversized, and the band itself cut afterwards into a hollow that is already waiting for it. Get that order wrong and no amount of crisp banding will make the strap look fastened.

Everything worth looking at on this camel is on its back: the medallion, the girth banding and the tufted crowns of both humps. At 120cm the raised head reaches the waist and the cloth is read from above. That is unusual and it governs the placing - a couchant animal is normally set where you meet it side-on, but this one wants to be looked down INTO. So a lawn, a gravel bed, a wide terrace, a courtyard floor, the inside of a turning circle; not a raised bed or a plinth, which hides the very thing you are paying for. We make a plain version of this same animal with no cloth at all, which suits a position seen only in profile.

Ornament That Sits on Top

Sixteen to eighteen weeks. Striking the medallion's rings from one centre precedes any ornament worked into them. With the slab dressed, the beast is blocked out couchant above it - folded legs a single lump, both humps left square. The girth hollow is worked into the barrel while there is still surplus stone to swell either side of it, and only then does the band go in. Head and neck follow, the throat locks undercut late, and the cloth is flattened, its rings trammelled and its boss, beading and fringe cut at the very end. Camel, cloth and slab are one block, with no pin, dowel or filler between them. Only 1,008kg couchant on its slab, gantry-borne and bedded onto a prepared pad. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
