White marble snake resting coiled with its head and neck raised in an S-curve
Coiled Snake White Marble Statue - 150cm $22,25600
Description

A snake rests coiled with its head and neck lifted clear in a tall S-curve. The mouth is closed and the eye is cut as a narrow slit. The body lies in two heavy overlapping coils. An incised scale pattern covers the whole body, finer at the throat and broad across the coils. It lies on a thick rectangular slab. White marble close to neutral, the slab crossed by strong grey and gold-grey veining.

A Scale Grid Set Out Before Any Coil Is Rounded

Scales are the whole surface of this animal and they only work if the rows run true. That is harder than it sounds, because the body is a tube that turns through more than a full circle: a grid marked on the rounded form crowds on the inside of every bend and opens on the outside, and once the rows wander the snake stops looking like a snake. So the grid goes on first, while the coils are still cut as flat-sided masses with square corners - a flat surface can be measured and stepped off exactly - and the rounding is done afterwards, following the marked rows rather than cutting across them. The scales themselves are incised last of all, from the head backward, so that any accumulated error is pushed into the tail where a single row absorbs it.

This is a low piece on a thick slab and you come to it looking down, and a little off the axis, which is the view that shows both coils overlapping with the raised neck free of them. At 150cm the raised head comes to about chest height on someone standing beside it. It suits paving, a gravel bed, a lawn edge, the margin of a pool, a wide step or the top of a low wall - anywhere it can be looked down into rather than up at. The slab is the strongest stone on the piece, veined in grey with warmer gold-grey threads running through it, and it is worth setting where that face is visible rather than buried in planting.

Low, and Read From Above

Sixteen to eighteen weeks. Setting out the scale grid before any coil is rounded keeps the rows running true around the curves. The slab is dressed and the coils blocked out above it as flat-sided masses, the scale grid stepped off on those flat faces before anything is rounded. The rounding follows the marked rows. The raised S-curve of the neck is held thick until late, since it carries the head and stands clear of everything. The scales are incised from the head backward at the very end. No pinning and no filler in snake or slab; the two are one piece of stone. Some 1,969kg for snake and slab, which a gantry will bed onto a prepared pad. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Reptiles are uncommon through animal sculptures, and veined slabs throughout marble sculptures.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
