Clear Lobed Openwork Scholar's Rock Resin Sculpture, 65cm, with large cut voids on a black marble base, against a plain white background.
Clear Lobed Openwork Scholar's Rock Resin Sculpture - 65cm $1,88900
Description

This resin rock stands on a black marble block, included with it. It is a very open form: four large voids are cut through it and between them the material runs as thick knobbly lobes, so the holes take up about as much of the outline as the solid does. Three finishes are made on this same form, and the piece is supplied colourless unless another is asked for.

Four Voids Holding as Much Room as the Material

The balance between hole and mass is what makes this one work. Each void has its own character: a broad arch at the top where two lobes meet overhead, a tall irregular one through the middle, a round one low on the left and a fourth cutting in from the base. Around them the lobes are heavy and rounded, bulging where they turn and pinching where they meet, and each lobe carries its own dimpled ripple so the surface never runs smooth for long. Seen from the front the piece is a ring of material around a run of openings; from the side those openings close up and it becomes a stack of lobes, which is a genuinely different object. The whole thing is polished, so every lobe carries a moving highlight and every void a dark edge.

At 65cm it suits a sideboard, a reception desk or a plinth, and its openings need something behind them; the block needs nothing underneath. Give it space: a wall close behind fills all four voids with grey and the piece loses most of what it is. A window, a mirror or open room behind it does the opposite. It reads from every side, so a spot approached from two directions suits it, and a raking light keeps the lobes distinct where a ceiling fitting merges them. Indoor use only.

Three Finishes on One Form, and How Open to Cut It

Work on a bespoke commission runs to 5–6 weeks, on a standard piece to 3–4. The finish is the main decision because the same form reads three quite different ways. Colourless is standard and the most architectural. A smoke version holds a dark grey at the foot that clears as it rises, which gives the piece weight and suits a pale room. An aqua version does the same in blue and is much the warmer of the two. On the cutting: four voids is standard, and it is made with two for a considerably more solid object or six for something closer to coral, though beyond four the lobes become slender and the piece needs a safer position. Other heights are made to order. It travels standing with all four voids packed out and the top arch braced, and it is a one-person carry that two people should place. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A knobbly rock pierced by four voids belongs with our abstract sculptures; lobes swelling and narrowing between the voids belong with our organic sculptures, and polished clear resin catching a highlight on every lobe suits our resin sculptures.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
