Clear Knotted Scholar's Rock Resin Sculpture, 97cm, with gold flecks and looping voids on a black marble base, shown against a plain white background.
Clear Knotted Scholar's Rock Resin Sculpture - 97cm $2,29400
Description

This resin scholar's rock is broad and notably shallow for its height, and the black marble it stands on is supplied. The material runs as a continuous band that doubles back on itself twice, enclosing two large voids and a third at the foot, so the object reads as a knot rather than as a stone. It is colourless with gold flecks, and three finishes are made on the form.

A Continuous Band Doubling Back on Itself

The depth it has against the width it covers is what makes this work. The band is broad in plan and narrow in section, so from the front the piece fills a great deal of wall and from the side it almost disappears, and the two views are so unalike that turning it a quarter changes the object entirely. Following the band from the foot, it rises on the left, turns over at the top into a closed loop, comes back down through the middle, and turns again to close a second loop at the bottom right. Nowhere does it end: there is no tip and no spur anywhere on it. The surface is rippled in close folds along the whole length of the band, which is what keeps a simple outline from reading as a cut-out, and the gold flecks gather in the folds rather than sitting on the flat.

Because it is broad and shallow, this wants width rather than depth on its surface. A long console, a credenza, a sideboard or a boardroom shelf takes it at 97cm with its base, and it needs only a narrow surface. It works genuinely well against a wall, since the band's face is the view and there is almost no side to lose. Even so, the three voids need a pale or a lit ground behind them, and a dark wall close up turns all three into nothing. Light along the wall is what shows the folds. Indoor use only.

The Three Finishes, and Where the Band Closes

Every standard piece is made in 3–4 weeks, and every bespoke commission in 5–6. Finish first: colourless with gold flecks is standard, a strong aqua carries a saturated blue-green through the whole band, and a clear version edged in teal sits between the two as a calm middle course. On the form: how many times the band doubles back is set at order, from one loop for something much simpler to three for a genuinely complex knot, and the widths of the voids follow from that. Depth can be increased where the piece will stand free rather than against a wall, which gives it a side worth looking at, and other widths are made with the height in proportion. This one needs care in transit more than most: it travels flat rather than standing, face up between moulded formers, and it should be lifted by the band at two points rather than by the loops. Two people can manage it. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A shallow, gold-flecked knot of clear resin belongs with our abstract sculptures; a band closing round three voids joins it to our organic sculptures, and a band rippled along its length suits our resin sculptures.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
