Description

A bull charges head down, its horns sweeping out level and tapering to fine points. The neck and shoulder swell into one smooth mass, the musculature is simplified into large polished volumes with the flank folds cut as broad grooves, and the tail hangs close. The stone is a near-black marble taken to a mirror polish, warm brown where it catches light. It stands on a base plate left riven and dark at the edge and dressed pale and smooth across the top. Near-black marble, mirror-polished, its base plate a paler grey across the dressed top.

The Polish Outlasts the Carving

Near-black marble is unforgiving in a way white marble is not: a dark mirror shows every flaw in its own surface, because it reflects rather than scatters. A scratch on white stone is a faint line; the same scratch on this is a bright streak visible across a courtyard. So the polishing is not a finishing stage here, it is most of the work - carried through eight or nine grades of abrasive, each one removing the scratches left by the last, with the piece washed down and inspected under raking light between every grade. It takes longer than shaping the animal did. The riven edge of the base plate is the deliberate counterpoint: split rough and never touched, so the polish above has something to be measured against.

A black polished animal behaves in the exact opposite way to the whites in this range. It does not catch light, it reflects what is around it - so against dark planting or a shaded wall it reads as a silhouette and the modelling disappears entirely, while against pale render, gravel, water or open sky it separates completely and the polish becomes the point. At 180cm the horns reach out at chest height, which is close enough to feel meant. A pale forecourt, a gravel circle, a terrace above water, a lawn with sky behind. Keep it out from under trees: leaf litter and sap mark a mirror polish far more readily than they mark matte stone.

Dark Stone Needs Light Behind It

Twenty to twenty-two weeks, and more than half of it is polishing. Polishing near-black marble to a mirror is a longer job than carving the animal was. The base plate is dressed, its top brought smooth and its edge split. The animal is roughed above it, the volumes of neck and shoulder taken down as one mass, and the two long horns held as thick tapered stubs until near the end because they reach furthest and break most easily. The flank grooves are cut, then the whole figure is taken through the polishing grades. Bull and base plate are one block, unpinned and unfilled at every point. Some 3,403kg of dark stone, craned across onto a poured concrete footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Dark stone is uncommon through animal sculptures, and polished form fills abstract sculptures.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
