Blue Ribbed Standing Furl Cast Resin Sculpture - 115cm, a ribbed blue resin form twisting upward on a black marble base, shown against a plain white background.
Blue Ribbed Standing Furl Cast Resin Sculpture - 115cm $3,39200
Description

This cast resin sculpture furls on a narrow foot above a block of black marble. A broad ribbed sheet wraps around a vertical line: it opens a small scoop to the left about a third of the way up, swells into a scalloped shell on the right, and near the top flares into a broad fan to the left, with a slim raised tip carrying on past it on the right. The material is a deep blue and nearly solid low down, thinning to clear and almost colourless at the tip. Fine striations climb the stem and the fan, and curved ribs scallop the shell between them.

An Axis That Is Not Actually There

The axis this piece turns around is not there. Nothing runs up the middle of it: the sheet describes a vertical line by wrapping about it, and the line exists only because the eye completes it. That is the whole design and it sets two requirements. First, the wrap has to be consistent: if the sheet leans in or out as it rises, the implied axis bends and the piece reads as a slump rather than as a spiral. Second, each opening has to happen without the sheet losing that line, so the small scoop low on the left swings out and comes back, and the broad fan near the top opens beside the axis rather than across it. The tip is the same argument at the other end. It carries on past the body along the axis, which is what confirms the line the wrap has been implying. The striations and the scalloped ribs then do the reporting, climbing where the sheet climbs and curving where it turns.

At 115cm including its stone this is floor work, and unlike a piece with a front it can be approached from any side: the wrap presents a different profile from every angle, which suits a position in the open rather than against a wall. The turn of a room, a stair foot, a wide landing or the space beside a doorway all work, and having no back, it can hold the middle of a hall. Give it height above the tip. A lamp placed high and a little to one side follows the spiral down and shows the turn; a flat frontal light reads it as a single leaning sheet and the axis disappears.

The Wrap, the Tip and Lifting It

Figure the difference between standard and bespoke at 3–4 weeks against 5–6. The number of turns, the height of the opening and the reach of the tip are drawn per commission, so a version wrapping twice, one whose fan opens nearer the foot, or a piece at gallery scale all come from it. Colour is agreed at order: this blue, an amber, a smoke grey, or clear throughout so the piece is only ribbing and turn. The furl is taken around the solid body at its foot, never by the fan or the tip. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A ribbed sheet furling round an axis it never shows, this furl joins our organic sculptures, our resin sculptures and our contemporary and modern sculptures.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For all orders delivered worldwide, all customs duties, import taxes, and applicable local clearance fees are fully included in the purchase price. We manage and settle these charges on your behalf, ensuring you will not incur any additional fees upon arrival.

Please note that this policy excludes shipments delivered to Switzerland, as well as any individual orders where an exclusion is explicitly stated prior to purchase; in such instances, local customs charges and import taxes remain the responsibility of the customer.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
