Blue Pierced Scholar's Rock Resin Sculpture, 47cm, pierced upright form fading from deep blue at the base to clear at the top, on a black marble base against a plain light grey background.
Blue Pierced Scholar's Rock Resin Sculpture - 47cm $1,88900
Description

The Blue Pierced Scholar's Rock Resin Sculpture stands on a black marble base, a slender upright pierced through in several places in the manner of a Taihu scholar's stone. The blue is strongest at the foot and thins as the form rises, so the top of the rock is almost colourless and the openings read as holes rather than as shadows. No two of the openings are the same size and none sits directly opposite another.

The Taihu Scholar's Stone Form, Pierced by Hand

Scholar's rocks were collected rather than carved, and water did the piercing over a very long time, so the logic of the form is irregularity: this one follows that logic rather than a symmetrical design. The openings are worked by hand and each is polished through, so the walls inside a hole are as clear and as smooth as the outer faces and none of them shows a rough bore. The blue runs through the resin rather than sitting on it, and the gradient from foot to tip is the colour of the material itself, which is why a chipped edge would show blue and not white. The black marble base is a separate stone with a level bed, and the rock sits down onto it without a visible fixing.

Set at 47cm on its marble, it suits a study desk or a console, and it is tall enough to hold a sideboard or a deep shelf on its own. It reads best with light behind or beside it so the openings carry, and it wants a little space around it rather than a crowded surface. The black marble base gives it enough visual weight to stand against dark timber as well as pale stone. Indoor use only.

Packed in a Foam Shell, Lifted by the Body

Reckon on 3–4 weeks for a standard piece, or 5–6 weeks for a bespoke one. This is a fragile piece to handle, and the handling is the part worth reading before it arrives. The pierced walls are the part that will not take a knock against stone or a hard edge, so the rock ships in a fitted foam shell cut to its own outline, with the marble base packed separately in the same crate, and it is unpacked onto a soft surface rather than a worktop. Lift it around the body with both hands and never through an opening, however convenient the opening looks: a finger through a hole puts all of the weight on the thinnest place on the piece. Set the base down and level it first, then place the rock onto it. Other colours can be cast, and a teal version and a colourless one flecked with gold are made on the same form; the base is supplied in an alternative stone, and a floor-standing rock can be commissioned at a greater scale. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A blue Taihu stone holed again and again belongs with our abstract sculptures; openings worn as if by water place it among our organic sculptures, and blue thickening toward the foot earns it room in our resin sculptures.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
