Blue Faceted Scholar's Rock Resin Sculpture, 86cm, with angular planes and cut-through openings on a black base, shown against a plain white background.
Blue Faceted Scholar's Rock Resin Sculpture - 86cm $2,56400
Description

Its black marble base is included with this resin scholar's rock. The mass is broken into flat angular facets rather than rounded lobes, so the whole surface is a set of planes meeting at hard edges, and five openings of different sizes are cut through it. Two finishes are made: this aqua, which holds the colour in the facets, and a colourless one.

Flat Planes Meeting at Hard Edges

Faceting rather than rounding is what defines this rock, and it changes how the piece behaves in a room. Each plane is a few centimetres across and set at its own angle, so where a rounded rock returns one moving highlight this one returns a dozen fixed ones, and it holds the same appearance as you cross the room instead of shifting. The edges between planes are left sharp, which draws a bright line along each of them and gives the outline a crystalline look at odds with the rock the piece is nominally describing. The five openings are cut across facets rather than between them, so each one is a polygon rather than a hole. The piece is narrow front to back, and the facets on the two flanks are the smallest, which keeps the sides from competing with the face.

At 86cm this stands on a surface at standing eye level. A console, a credenza, a sideboard or a study shelf all take it, and nothing goes underneath. The faceting is what to place for: a single strong light source, from one side, is what puts a different value on every plane, and diffuse light from several directions flattens it into a grey mass. It follows that this piece does better in a room with one window or one lamp than in a bright even one. The openings want a little space behind them, though less than an openwork rock would, since the facets carry the object on their own. Indoor use only.

Colourless or Aqua, and How Fine to Cut the Facets

In the workshop a standard piece takes 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission 5–6. The two finishes are genuinely different objects. This aqua holds a clear blue-green that pools in the deeper facets and thins on the shallow ones, so the colour maps the geometry, and it suits a room with little natural light; the colourless version is the crisper of the two, because nothing competes with the play of light across the planes. On the cutting: the facets can be run coarser, half a dozen large planes to a face, which reads bolder and more mineral, or finer for something closer to cut crystal. The five openings run from three to eight. Other heights keep the same faceting. It travels standing with the arrises individually protected, since a sharp polished edge is what suffers first, and it is a one-person lift. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

An aqua rock cut into flat facets belongs with our abstract sculptures; a narrow piece pierced across its planes suits our indoor sculptures, and blue-green pooling in the deeper facets places it among our organic sculptures.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
