Blue Crossed Plate Wing Acrylic Sculpture, 64cm, with radial plates forming two open wing-like lobes in blue-to-white tones, shown on a plain light background.
Blue Crossed Plate Wing Acrylic Sculpture on Marble - 64cm $3,65400
Description

An acrylic sculpture of radial plates, set on edge round a circle and crossing low down so the ring opens into two wings that lean apart. The two swept lobes do not meet and close: they cross one another at the foot and rise apart, so the opening between them is tall, rounded where they cross and left open at the top between their two tips, and the outline reads as two wings. The plates are set radially and twisted in sequence as they go, leaving a ragged outer edge of plate ends and a smooth swept inner face. Blue is saturated at the crossing, where the plates are densest, and clears towards the tips. It stands on a thin marble plate, which is included.

Two Lobes That Cross Instead of Closing

The crossing is the hard part. Each lobe is a run of flat plates set radially and turned a little further one after the next, and at the foot the two runs cross one another, so the plates crowd together there and the blue is at its deepest. The two lobes are set out as one continuous sequence rather than as two halves, because a discontinuity at the crossing would show as a step in both swept surfaces at once. From the crossing the spacing opens as the lobes rise, and the plates clear towards two tips that turn back towards each other at the top and stop short, so the blue is spent just where the two wings come closest again.

At sixty-four centimetres including its plate this is a console or sideboard piece, seen square on. It is shallow front to back, so it works against a wall and not in the middle of a table. The marble plate under it gives it a footing of its own. Backlight through the crossing is what to aim for: it drives the saturated blue outward through the plates and leaves the tips almost invisible, which exaggerates the wing. In front light the piece reads as a pale fan and much of the colour is lost. A cool wall suits the blue; a warm one greys it.

Plate, Base and How It Is Handled

Standard pieces take 3–4 weeks and bespoke commissions 5–6. The angle of the crossing, the number of plates and how far the lobes open are drawn per piece, so a narrow upright wing or a wide shallow one both come from this construction. Colour is settled at order: this blue, a green, an amber or clear plate. The marble is offered in white, black or grey, and its footprint is sized to the piece rather than being a standard plate. Versions at floor scale are made. It is lifted by the crossing, with the plate carried beneath it, and never by a lobe tip. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Two arcs crossing at a point is geometry before it is anything, so geometric sculpture is the shelf, acrylic sculpture the material, and indoor sculpture the room it wants.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For all orders delivered worldwide, all customs duties, import taxes, and applicable local clearance fees are fully included in the purchase price. We manage and settle these charges on your behalf, ensuring you will not incur any additional fees upon arrival.

Please note that this policy excludes shipments delivered to Switzerland, as well as any individual orders where an exclusion is explicitly stated prior to purchase; in such instances, local customs charges and import taxes remain the responsibility of the customer.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
