Black Combed Rib Standing Slab Resin Sculpture, 20cm, with horizontal ribbed texture either side of a smooth vertical band, shown on a plain white background.
Black Combed Rib Standing Slab Resin Sculpture - 20cm $1,75400
Description

A black slab, slim from front to back, combed in fine ribs either side of a smooth centre band. The ribs run horizontally across both halves of the face and the band runs vertically between them, so one light source is answered in two ways side by side and the slab reads as upright rather than lying down. Nothing is supplied to prop it, and it rests back on its own lower edge.

A Smooth Band Through a Combed Face

A face combed all over is a texture and nothing more. What makes this one an object is the band left uncut down the middle, and its job is to be the only place on the piece where light behaves differently. The ribs break every highlight into a row of short marks; the band returns one continuous reflection, so a single light source produces two entirely different results side by side. That also gives the slab an axis it would otherwise lack. The outline is a rounded square with no strong direction in it, and without the band the combing would read as horizontal and the piece would lie down. The band runs vertically, against the ribs, and sets the slab upright. Matt black is used for the ribbed areas for the same reason the band is polished: the contrast is the whole design and both halves of it have to be unambiguous.

At 20cm it needs very little room and suits a desk, a narrow shelf or a mantel. It is read from the front and wants a light to one side rather than straight on: a frontal light puts the same value on the ribs and the band and the division disappears. It rests back on its lower edge rather than standing plumb, so it wants a surface with a little depth behind it rather than the front of a shelf.

The Band, the Ribs, and Delivery

As standard the build runs 3–4 weeks, and as a bespoke commission 5–6. The ribbing is cut coarser, the centre band is drawn wider, and the slab is cast at other sizes. The band is also drawn wider or moved off centre, which changes the balance of the face entirely, and the slab is cast at other spans. A tinted body is offered and works less well than the black, since colour gives the eye something to read other than the difference in surface that the piece is built on. It ships upright in a flat case with both faces protected, and one person can carry it. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A combed face split by one smooth band belongs with our contemporary and modern sculptures; matt black resin with a polished stripe leads to our resin sculptures, and a small slab for a narrow shelf joins our indoor sculptures.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
