Black Charred Timber Plank Bench on Resin Blocks - 330cm
Black Charred Timber Plank Bench on Resin Blocks - 330cm $11,94200
Description

The single timber plank of this bench runs its full length, and its whole surface has been charred and then left alone: the black is fissured and slightly raised where the grain has opened, and nothing has been sanded back to flatten it. Two blocks of clear cast resin carry it at sitting height, roughly formed rather than polished, and hollow rather than solid. The contrast is the point: opaque black on colourless glass-like supports.

Char Left Exactly as the Fire Left It

Charring to this depth and then stopping is a judgement rather than a process. Taken too far the surface flakes and will not hold; stopped too early it reads as stain rather than char, and the fissures that give the surface its grain never open. The plank is worked until the grain has lifted and then sealed while the relief is still proud, which is why the black feels like bark rather than paint. The resin blocks are left with their casting faces on show, and being hollow they are formed with a wall even enough that they read as solid from any angle. No two planks char alike, because the timber decides where it opens.

A plank this long wants a wall it can run along without interruption: a hall, a lobby, a long garden room. The black plank holds its line against almost any wall colour, and the clear blocks beneath make the whole thing appear to float, which is the reason to keep the floor beneath them plain. Light from one side rakes across the fissures and brings the char up. Leave the overhangs at both ends clear rather than driving it into a corner.

Plank Length, Block Position and a Three-Person Lift

Where the piece is standard the build is 3–4 weeks, and where it is bespoke 5–6. Plank length is cut to order and the char depth can be taken lighter for a browner surface or heavier for a deeper relief. Block position is set out at order, and a third block can be added under the middle for a longer plank. The blocks are available tinted. Plank and blocks travel separately, with the plank located on the blocks by dowels rather than fixed, so it can be lifted off again. Access wants checking first: a plank this long will not turn a tight corner. Three people are wanted for it. Each block is a two-person carry despite being hollow. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Char left exactly as the fire left it belongs with our organic sculptures; hollow blocks of rough clear resin lead to our resin sculptures, and a seat with real weight in it joins our indoor sculptures.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
