Standing Lion With Head Raised Stone Statue - 120cm $15,29600
Description

A lion stands with its head lifted and turned upward, its mouth parted rather than fully open, and the near forepaw set high on a rock outcrop to one side. The mane is cut in deep combed waves that stand out around the throat, the flank and hind leg are modelled lean, and the tail hangs down and curls along the base. The base is a naturalistic outcrop of broken rock. Deep beige runs through the body of the stone while the mane and the outcrop stay cream, all of it banded in a single piece, with brown iron staining crossing the flank.

A Raised Throat, and a Crack Left Where It Is

Lifting the head opens the throat, and the throat is the thinnest section on a standing lion - a long unsupported span of stone between the jaw and the chest with the whole weight of the head at the top of it. So the neck is carved last and left heavier than it looks, and the mane is deliberately kept full behind it, where it doubles as structure. This stone also has iron in it, which stains in brown bands, and one of those bands carries a fine natural crack along the flank. It is not repaired. A crack that follows the bed of a stone is stable, and cutting it out or filling it would put a visible patch across the middle of the animal in exchange for nothing.

The head is raised and turned up, which means the face is composed for someone standing under it, not level with it. Placed on a plinth it turns away from the viewer entirely. Set it on the ground and let people come to it, ideally from slightly downhill or from the foot of a slope - at the bottom of steps, on a bank above a path, at the low end of a garden. At 120cm the shoulder is about hip height and the muzzle sits above that, so the upward line still reads. The beige and cream banding and the brown iron marks all deepen with weathering outdoors.

Carved to Be Seen From Below

Twelve to fourteen weeks. As with any porous stone the cuts are lighter and more numerous, and the bed of the material is followed rather than crossed. The outcrop is blocked out first with the high spur left thick for the raised paw to be fitted to. The body is roughed standing with the belly clear, and the hind leg and flank are brought down lean early while there is still mass at the front to hold the piece steady. The mane is worked along the banding so the change from cream to beige runs with the locks. The neck and lifted head are cut last, and the throat is checked against a template throughout rather than by eye, because there is no way to put stone back. Natural voids and the bed-following crack are left as found. Lion and outcrop are one piece, nothing pinned or filled. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Around 1,008kg in one piece, positioned with a gantry and bedded onto a prepared footing.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
