Standing Lion With a Tousled Mane White Marble Statue - 120cm $17,79900
Description

A lion stands with its head raised, the mane cut in deep tousled locks that stand away from the face and drop into a ragged fringe at the chest. The body behind the mane is cut lean through the flank and the hindquarters, and the tail reaches out behind the animal and curls at the tip. It stands on a thin rectangular slab. The marble is white with grey veining that runs mainly through the slab. The two versions are not the same pose: one faces forward with the jaws closed, the other turns into profile with them open.

A Tail That Is Held at One End Only

This tail leaves the haunch and goes out behind the animal without coming back to touch anything, so it is held at one end and free at the other. That is the least forgiving arrangement in stone: the whole length is working against the single joint at the haunch, and the curl at the tip puts the weight furthest from it. The carver keeps the tail thick and roughly square through the entire carving and only brings it down to its finished section once the body, mane and head are done and the piece will not be turned again. The taper is then cut from the tip backwards, taking the weight off the end first, so the joint never carries more load than it will in the finished piece.

The head on this lion is up rather than turned down or level, which means the piece reads badly under anything - a canopy, a low branch, a doorway lintel all cut across the line the raised head is making. Give it open sky above it: a drive, a lawn edge, the middle of a terrace, or the end of a path. At 120cm at the shoulder the muzzle sits above that, so it meets an adult around the chest and above. The thin slab lets it stand directly on paving or gravel without a plinth. White marble carries best against brick or dark planting.

A Raised Head Wants Space Above It

Eleven to thirteen weeks. The slab is cut first and the animal roughed standing on it from the same block. The head is set early, while there is spare stone at the neck to adjust the angle, because a raised head cannot be corrected downward later without losing the neck. The flank and hind leg are brought down lean next. The mane is the slowest stage: the locks are tousled rather than combed, which means each one runs a different way and none of them can be copied from its neighbour, and they are separated from the outside inward. The fringe below the chest is undercut after that. The tail is finished last, tip backwards. Nothing is pinned or filled - animal, tail and slab are one block. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Around 1,008kg in one piece, which a small gantry will bed onto a prepared footing.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
