Standing Lion on a Swagged Pedestal Marble Statue - 210cm $35,04200
Description

High upon a swagged pedestal a lion stands roaring, a carved stump braced beneath its chest. The mane falls in deep rippled locks past the chest, the body is lean through the flank, and the tail lifts and curves out behind. The pedestal carries a carved frieze of leaf swags either side of a central rosette, with a further rosette on the return face. The stone is a bright white marble with faint grey veining. You are looking at two of them; the figure quoted buys a single lion upon its pedestal.

A Frieze That Has to Come Out Even

The swags and rosettes on this pedestal repeat, and repetition is where hand carving is caught out. Cut the swags one after another by eye and each will be a fraction wider than the last, so by the return face the rosette no longer sits at the centre and the error is on display at the corner. So none of it is carved until all of it is set out: the face is divided with dividers, the rosette centred, the swags stepped off either side and adjusted until the same measure fits both faces, and every swag's springing point marked. The carving then proceeds in passes across the whole frieze rather than swag by swag, which holds them to a common depth as well as a common width.

The tree stump under this lion's chest is structural - it is what stops a standing animal in stone from having to carry its own belly across an unsupported span - but it is also carved as bark and meant to read as part of the scene. Set the piece so the stump side is visible rather than turned to a wall, or the carving looks as though it is hiding a prop. At 210cm the animal stands well above head height, so it is composed to be looked up at from in front and to one side. Bright white marble needs something dark behind it: a hedge, brick, deep planting.

A Stump That Wants to Be Seen

Twenty to twenty-two weeks. Setting out the pedestal frieze with dividers precedes any carving, so that swags and rosette arrive evenly round the face. The mouldings are run once the frieze is cut, and the bed on top is worked flat and proved before the animal is made. The lion comes from its own block: roughed standing with the stump left as a solid mass under the chest, and then flank and hind leg are cut lean, and the mane divided afterwards lock by lock. The stump is carved as bark near the end, after the body above it is finished and it no longer has to be gripped. The tail is freed from the haunch last of the animal, and the head turned after that. Animal, stump and pedestal alike are free of pins, dowels, fillers and hidden joints. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Some 5,404kg for one lion and pedestal, craned down in turn onto a poured concrete footing.

Neighbouring pedestal groups occupy animal sculptures, and the tallest work fills large garden statues.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
