Standing Lion on a Moulded Pedestal Marble Statue - 220cm $35,45900
Description

A lion stands on a tall moulded pedestal with its head turned outward and its jaws open, its forepaws set at the front edge of the cap. The mane falls in long waves to a deep fringe at the chest and the body is modelled lean behind it. The pedestal has a projecting moulded cap, a sunk field on each face and a stepped base, and carries about half the overall height. The marble is white with grey veining running strongly through the pedestal. The two versions differ in the stance: one stands square to the front, the other turns side-on with the body in view.

A Pedestal Dressed on All Four Faces

A pedestal against a wall is finished on three sides. This one is meant to stand in the open at a gate, so all four faces are dressed, all four carry a sunk field, and the mouldings have to return round every corner and meet exactly. That is the fussy part. A moulding run is cut with a template drawn along the face, and where two runs meet at a corner the profiles must arrive at the same depth at the same point or the mitre reads as a step. The carver works the four faces in rotation rather than finishing one at a time, checking each corner against the one opposite, so any drift shows up while there is still stone to correct it with.

At 220cm the lion stands well above head height and the head is turned outward, which is the arrangement this piece is composed for - it is composed to be seen from below and slightly to one side rather than examined at arm's length. It belongs on a gate pier, at the end of a balustrade, or squarely at the top of a broad flight where the approach runs straight up to it. It needs a firm level bed: the pedestal is tall and narrow relative to its height, so the ground under it matters more than it would for a low piece. White marble with strong grey veining reads clearly against brick and against dark hedging.

Above Head Height, and Turned Outward

Eighteen to twenty weeks for one lion and its pedestal. The pedestal courses are cut and dressed first, the beds worked flat and tested against each other, and the mouldings run on all four faces in rotation. The sunk fields are cut after the mouldings, not before, so their margins can be set off the finished moulding line. The lion is carved from its own block: roughed standing, with the forepaws left thick where they sit at the cap edge, then the flank and hind leg brought down lean, then the mane worked outward to inward and the chest fringe undercut. The head is turned late, once the body is stable. Assembly is last, courses bedded up in order and the lion set on the cap. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Around 6,214kg for one lion and pedestal, craned in courses onto a poured concrete foundation.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
