Small white marble elephant with its trunk curled back over its head
Small Standing Elephant White Marble Statue - 80cm $15,44000
Description

A small elephant stands with its trunk raised and curled back over its own head. Its ears are spread and folded forward and its tusks are short, pointing down. There is no cloth and no harness anywhere on it - the modelling is naturalistic and the animal is left plain. It stands on a slab cut to an irregular rocky outline rather than squared. White marble with a faintly warm cast, smooth and nearly unmarked, cream drifting softly.

A Base Cut Last to Suit the Carving

A squared plinth can be dressed first and set aside, because its shape owes nothing to what will stand on it. An irregular rocky outline cannot: every notch and shelf in it has to sit where the animal's feet and weight actually fall, so it is left as a rough mass until the elephant above it is finished. Only then is the outline cut, working around four feet that are already in their final positions. At 80cm the whole piece comes out of one small block, which removes the usual margin for error - there is no surplus stone to retreat into if a cut goes wide, so the roughing is kept deliberately timid and the waste comes off in thin passes.

Everything else in this range needs a terrace, a lawn or a forecourt. This does not. At 80cm this is the smallest piece in the range, and it is looked down upon. A hall table, a wide windowsill, the turn of a staircase, a console in an entrance - it will sit on any of them, and at under 300kg the floor beneath is a question of spreading the load rather than of engineering. Put it where the raised trunk has clear air above it: the curl over the head is the whole gesture of the piece and a shelf or a low ceiling directly above will cut it off. Warm white marble sits easily against limestone, oak and plaster, and it does not fight a cream wall.

The One Piece Here for Indoors

Fourteen to sixteen weeks. Cutting the irregular rocky outline is left until the animal above it is done, so the slab answers the carving. The block is squared, the animal roughed standing within it, and the legs left as thick columns while the body is brought down. Ears and trunk follow, both thinned late because both are the most exposed stone on the piece and the easiest to lose. The trunk is carried as a solid mass curling over the head until near the end, when the air is opened out beneath it. The slab outline is cut last of all. No pin, no dowel and no filler anywhere in animal or slab; both come from one block. Only 299kg, the lightest piece in the whole range, which four people and a trolley can bed onto a prepared pad. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Compact beasts are scarce through animal sculptures, and indoor-scale work sits in indoor sculptures.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
