Description

A European lion sits up on its haunches on a thin flat slab, the mane deeply undercut and flowing. The two versions are not mirror images: one holds its jaws closed, the other roars with the mouth open and the teeth showing. There is no plinth under either. One lion is priced here.

A Seated Pair That Differ in Expression

A seated lion carries its whole weight on two upright forelegs, so the block has to hold that mass while the mane is cut back clear of the shoulder, and the depth of that undercutting is what gives the head its bulk. Both manes are cut in long locks lifted clear of the shoulder on all sides, which is why the stone between lock and shoulder is the thinnest anywhere on the piece. Roaring or closed, the two heads are laid out from the same skull measurements and diverge only at the jaw. The slabs beneath are cut from a paler beige bed of the same stone, so the lions sit darker than the slabs they stand on.

Seated figures read upward rather than along their length, which suits a doorway, a gate pier, the head of a stair or either side of a broad entrance where the extra height carries. They stand about waist height, so the head is met near eye level and rewards a position with clear floor around them. Slab bases need only a level hard surface, no foundation.

Carving a Lion That Sits Up

Sixteen weeks for the pair, fourteen for one. Each slab is cut and levelled first, the body roughed sitting up, and the mane locks freed only when the head and shoulder are finished and will take no more work. The open jaw is cut before the mane falls over it. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Around 3,403kg per piece in one part, craned into place on a level hard surface.

Recumbent figures are in animal sculptures, with the wider group under wildlife sculptures.

Production Time

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
