Description

A lion sits erect on its haunches with its head turned outward and its mouth closed, one forepaw laid over the top of a tall cartouche standing upright beside it. The cartouche is carved with an acanthus spray inside a moulded frame and rolls over into a scroll at its foot. The mane falls in long combed waves to the chest. Animal and cartouche sit on a moulded pedestal with a stepped base. The marble is a warm beige with grey veining through the pedestal and the cartouche. The price covers a single lion with its pedestal.

Carving Something That Has Curled

The cartouche is a scroll: at its foot the stone rolls over on itself as a sheet of something flexible would, and the whole point of the form is that it looks as though it has curled. Marble has not curled and cannot. So the illusion is built from an undercut - the roll is cut back underneath until the sheet appears to lift free of what is behind it, and the thickness left at that point is the thinnest stone anywhere on the piece. Too little and the roll breaks under its own weight during finishing; too much and it reads as a lump rather than a curl. The carver takes it down in small passes and stops as soon as a shadow appears under the lip, because that shadow is the whole effect.

The cartouche is the reason for this piece and it faces outward, so put it where it can be seen square on rather than edge on. A gate pier, the end of a wall, either side of an entrance or the head of steps all work, with the animal turned so the acanthus face meets the approach. At 210cm overall the cartouche sits at about chest to shoulder height, close enough that the acanthus and the moulded frame are worth looking at. The warm beige marble sits comfortably against brick, gravel and render, and the grey veining shows more clearly on the pedestal than on the animal.

A Cartouche Wants to Be Read

Eighteen to twenty weeks. The pedestal is cut and its mouldings run first, on all faces, and its bed worked flat. The figure and its cartouche come from a separate block: the seated mass is blocked out with the cartouche standing beside it as a plain tablet, and that tablet carries the piece's stability through most of the work. The mane is separated next, outer locks inward. The tablet is then shaped - frame moulding first, then the acanthus spray sunk inside it, then the roll at the foot undercut last of all. The forepaw is cut over the top edge afterwards so the grip is carved rather than fitted. No part of the figure is pinned, filled or joined. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Around 4,002kg across two parts, each set by crane onto a prepared concrete foundation.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
