Honey marble lion seated with a broad mane fringe over the chest
Seated Lion With a Chest Fringe Honey Marble Statue - 140cm $22,24900
Description

A lion sits square on its haunches with its head up and its mouth closed, the mane combed into long waves that lift off the brow and drop as a broad fringe across the chest. Both forelegs come down straight, with the paws placed together at the front of the slab. It sits on a thin rectangular slab. The stone is a deep honey beige, mottled with cream where it runs through the mane. A single piece is what this price buys; a second can be ordered alongside.

A Fringe Carved Away From the Chest

The mane on this lion does not lie against the body. It hangs forward off the neck as a broad curtain of separate locks, standing clear of the chest with daylight behind it, which means it is not carved into the mass at all - it is carved as a shell in front of the mass, joined only along the top where it leaves the neck. Every lock is therefore working as a small bracket, and the deeper the carver goes to get the shadow, the less stone is holding it. The curtain is left thick until the chest and forelegs behind it are complete, then thinned from the front, and the gap behind it is opened last with long-reach tools working downward so no load is ever put across the locks.

This lion is not roaring. Its mouth is closed and its head is up, which reads as watchful rather than warning, and that is easier to live with somewhere people pass every day. At 140cm seated it comes to about chest height on an adult - close range, where the combed mane and the fringe are the point. Put it at a front entrance, on a terrace, at the head of a short flight or beside a path, and approach it from the front where the fringe reads as a curtain rather than a slab. The honey stone is at its best in low, raking light.

A Closed Mouth at Doorstep Height

Thirteen to fifteen weeks. The slab is cut first and the seated mass roughed on it, with the mane left as a solid collar all round the neck. The forelegs and paws are brought forward and finished next, because they sit behind the fringe and cannot be reached once it is opened. The chest is then completed. Only after that is the mane divided: the outer locks are separated first, the curtain thinned from the front, and the space behind it opened downward at the very end. The head and the closed muzzle are cut last, when there is nothing above them left to lean on. Nothing is pinned or filled - animal and slab come from a single block. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Around 1,601kg in one piece, which a gantry will bed onto a prepared concrete footing.

More seated lions are in animal sculptures, and the coloured stone under marble sculptures.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
