Pink veined marble lion seated frontally with a broad mane ruff, jaws closed
Seated Lion in Veined Pink Marble Statue - 125cm $17,86800
Description

Facing forward on a thin slab, a lion sits with its forelegs straight and its paws spread. The mane is cut in tight rippled locks that stand out in a broad ruff around the face and hang in a long fringe over the chest, and the brows are drawn together above the muzzle. Its marble is salmon-pink, banded through with strong grey-blue veining on every face. The two versions differ in pose, and one animal is what this price buys.

When the Stone Is Mostly Vein

On a lightly veined marble the carver steers one strong band away from the face and the rest looks after itself. This stone gives no such choice: the grey-blue veining runs through nearly all of it in broad diagonals, so there is no orientation with a clear face in it. What can be done is choose WHICH band crosses the face and where. A vein running down across an eye reads as a crack and ruins the animal; the same vein running across the ruff below the jaw reads as depth and improves it. So the block is turned wet until the strongest band falls into the mane, and the head is then set out from that decision rather than from the block's own squareness.

The ruff on this lion opens outward all round the face like a collar, and it is composed to be seen from the front - from the side it foreshortens into a flat mass and the drawn brows disappear entirely. So it belongs where the approach is head-on: either side of a doorway, at the foot of steps, centred at the end of a short walk. At 125cm the ruff meets the chest of anyone standing over it, which is close range. Pink marble with grey veining wants a plain background; against brick or patterned paving the veining and the surroundings compete.

A Ruff That Wants to Be Met Square

Fourteen to sixteen weeks. Reading the block wet comes before any cut, so the grey-blue bands can be steered clear of the face. The slab is squared next and the seated mass roughed on it with the ruff left as a solid collar. Body and haunch are finished while that collar is still intact, since it is what the piece is handled by. The ruff is opened outward from the face, each lock lifted clear of the one beneath. The chest fringe is undercut after the ruff stands clear, and the forepaws are divided and spread last of the body. Face, brows and muzzle are cut at the very end. Neither the animal nor its slab carries a pin, a dowel or any filler at all. Roughly 1,140kg for the single piece, which one gantry lift will place on a poured footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Veined coloured stone recurs across animal sculptures, and the marbles themselves under marble sculptures.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
