Roaring Seated Lion on a Pedestal Marble Statue - 215cm $30,59200
Description

A lion sits erect on its haunches with its jaws open in a roar and its head turned slightly outward, the forepaws set square and the mane cut in deep locks that fall in a heavy fringe to the chest. It sits on a moulded pedestal with a sunk field on the face and a stepped base beneath. Grey veining runs through the pedestal and the cap of an otherwise white marble, and more faintly over the haunch. The two versions differ in the head: one roars with the mouth open, the other sits with it closed and the head carried higher.

A Sunk Field Is All Straight Lines

The recessed face on this pedestal is not applied to it. The whole face is cut back and a margin is left standing round the edge, which means the finished thing is a straight line sitting a short distance from another straight line, all the way round. Nothing is more unforgiving. A curve that wanders by a millimetre reads as a curve; a straight margin that wanders by a millimetre reads as a mistake, and the eye finds it immediately because it has the pedestal's own edge to compare against. So the margin is set out with a square and a line before any stone is removed, the field is sunk in shallow passes across its whole area rather than corner by corner, and the four inside corners are cut last, by hand, because a machine head leaves them rounded.

An open jaw is the loudest thing a carver can put on an animal and it works at a distance - the shadow inside the mouth reads from far further away than a mane or a paw does. That makes this a piece for an approach rather than a corner: a drive, a gateway, the foot of a broad flight, somewhere it is seen from thirty paces before it is seen from three. At 215cm on its pedestal the head is well above eye level and turned outward, which is the angle it is carved for. Against brick, or against a dark hedge, the white stone and its grey veining both come forward.

A Roar Carries, So Give It Distance

Eighteen to twenty weeks. The pedestal is cut first, its mouldings run and its sunk field set out and taken down, corners last. The lion is carved from its own block: roughed seated with the forepaws left thick where they sit at the front of the cap, then the haunch and flank brought in, then the mane separated from the outer locks inward with the chest fringe undercut after it. The open jaw is cut at the end - teeth, tongue and palate all reached through the mouth opening itself, which is narrower than the tools would like. Assembly is the final stage, the courses bedded up in order and the animal set on the cap once the bed is proved flat. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Around 5,799kg in two parts, craned in sequence onto a footing of poured concrete.

Production Time

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
