Roaring Lion With a Standing Mane Marble Statue - 170cm $29,61900
Description

Squarely on its haunches a lion roars outward, forelegs run straight and well ahead of the body. Its jaws are wide in a roar with the teeth cut. The mane is combed into long flame-like locks that lift away from the neck rather than lying against it, falling past the chest. The haunch is drawn under with the tail laid against it, and the animal sits on a thin rectangular slab. The stone is an ivory-warm white marble with grey shading in the deeper cuts of the mane. One animal is what is sold here; two make the matched arrangement.

A Mane With Nothing to Lean On

Locks that stand away from the neck are undercut, and undercut stone has to be braced while it is being cut. On a lion mounted on a tall pedestal there is a solid block below to take the strain of the mallet. This one sits on a slab barely thicker than a paving stone, so there is nothing underneath to absorb the blow, and every strike on a raised lock travels down through the animal and out into the bench. The carver therefore works the standing locks with a lighter mallet and more strokes, sets the piece on a sand bed rather than on timber so the shock is damped, and separates the outermost locks last of all, when the piece no longer has to be turned.

Both forelegs run well forward of the body on this lion, so its footprint is longer than it first looks and the front of the piece needs to stay clear - set against a step riser or into a border, the paws are the first thing to get knocked and the last thing anyone notices. Leave a hand's width in front of it. At 170cm seated the head is above eye level and turned outward, which makes it a doorway or gateway piece rather than something to look down on. Ivory-warm white sits well against brick and stone and does not need a dark backdrop the way a bright white does.

Forelegs That Ask for a Clear Front

Sixteen to eighteen weeks. Levelling the slab is the opening move, after which the seated body is roughed upon it with the forelegs still one undivided mass. Body, haunch and tail are finished while that mass is still intact, because it is what the animal rests on when turned. The mane follows. The inner locks go first and the standing outer ones are left until the very end. Both are worked on a sand bed with a light mallet. The forelegs are then divided, brought forward and finished, and the paws separated toe by toe. Head, jaw and teeth are cut last of all, through the mouth opening. There is no pinning, no filling and no joint anywhere in the animal or its slab. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Some 2,867kg as one undivided block, which arrives by crane onto a footing prepared in poured concrete.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
